Randolph Register, June 25, 19203582
The people of this village were shocked and "sorely grieved" upon learning of the death of Mrs. Ethel Nevins, which occurred at the Memorial hospital in Buffalo Friday evening at 10 o'clock, following an operation. Her death comes as a distinct shock, owing to the fact that even her most intimate friends were unaware of the seriousness of her condition. It was known to a few that Mrs. Nevins had not been real strong for some time past and that she had consulted local physicians and had received some medical treatment, but did not realize the case to be alarming.
Mrs. Nevins has been employed in Jamestown for some time past, and when she became aware that an operation was inevitable, she went directly to Buffalo and after her arrival there wrote her sister, Mrs. George Swan of this place, stating only a few simple facts in regard to herself, using great care not to excite alarm. Mrs. Swan did not hear from her again and supposed she was doing well, until several days after the operation when she received word that the case was considered very critical. She hastened to Buffalo and arrived at her sister's bedside only a few hours before she passed away.
Undertaker E. F. Merrill went to Buffalo Saturday and accompanied the remains to thehome of Mr. and Mrs. George Swan here.
Ethel Brown Nevins was the daughter of Hiram and Rose Martin Brown and was born in East Randolph January 19th, 1875. In this village she grew to womanhood and here her marriage with Merton A. Nevins took place. Beside those already mentioned, she is survived by one son, Paul Nevins of Denver, Col.
The funeral was held from the Swan home Wednesday at 2 p. m., Rev. H. H. Clare officiating. Among those attending from a distance were Mrs. May Harold of Salamanca, Mrs. Thelma Sisson, Mrs. Anna Potter, Mrs. Francis Haas, Mrs. Gertie Sperry and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Swan of Jamestown. Paul Nevins did not reach here in time to attend the obsequies; the burial was deferred until his arrival here. Interment was made at 10 o'clock Thrusday in East Randolph cemetery.
