EAST RANDOLPH, N. Y.—(AP)—Mrs. Edna Swan was killed by an automobile last night in Main street.
Randolph Register, October 31, 19413753
With but a few steps to go before reaching the safety of the highway's edge in front of her home at East Randolph, Mrs. Edna M. Brown Swan, 65, was almost instantly killed Friday night at 11:30 o'clock when struck by an automobile.
Leron A. Wright, 22, of Little Valley, driver of the car, told members of the sheriff's department that lights of an approaching automobile blinded him and he did not see the woman until an instant before his machine struck her. A light rain was falling at the time, it was pointed out, and the wet pavement increased reflection of the other car's lights.
Mrs. Swan was crossing Main street to go to her home in the People's Service Station building. She was nearly across when the east bound Wright car struck her. The car was brought to a stop within the distance of a few feet.
Other occupants of the car were Mr. Wright's brothers, Claude and Wilbur, and his wife, Mrs. Gertrude Wright.
Dr. Robert Fleming of Randolph was called and and investigation was conducted by Sheriff Morgan L. Sigel, Deputies Louis C. Schults of East Randolph and John D. Sharpe of Little Val[l]ey and Coroner George A. Middleton of Little Valley. The driver of the car was not held. Mrs. Swan's chest was crushed and an internal hemorrhage caused her death.
The daughter of Hiram and Rose Martin Brown, Mrs. Swan was born in East Randolph April 3, 1876. She had been a resident of East Randolph all her life. In 1900 she married George A. Swan.
Surviving are her husband, three sons, Lawrence B. Swan of Elmira; James E. Swan of East Randolph and Lester G. Swan of Randolph, a daughter, Mrs. Marshall Marsh of Randolph, and five grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted at the Myers & Myers Funeral Home Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock with Rev. Harold Wiley Freer officiating. Bearers were Merle Moffat, Olin Marsh, Donald Huntington and Ernest Reynolds. Burial was in East Randolph cemetery. Among the groups who paid tribute to Mrs. Swan's memory were disabled veterans of World War Chapter 13, Elmira, employes of Kinfolks, Little Valley and Borden employes.
