Weddings are always of interest to society. But the big wedding in Southampton last weekend was much, much more. It seemed as if there was talk of nothing else at the Beach Club, Meadow Club and at the private parties.
The much-talked-about wedding concerned beautiful Ruth Havemeyer and John Norwood, who were married beneath an old appletree in the gardens of the Irving House on Saturday, July 11.
Ruth Havemeyer is the luscious blonde daughter of Mrs. Frederick Havemeyer of the sugar dynasty and a great-granddaughter of the founder of the Great Northern Railroad. An earlier marriage, which gave her a lovely little daughter, ended in divorce. Although the bride's immediate family did not attend, much of Southampton society turned out for the nuptials, and the reception following in the Irving's gardens. The idyllic weather contributed grandly, as it proved to be the finest and warmest day of the current season.
The bride looked radiant in a Sarmi of silk pink horizontal stripes. She was attended by a former schoolmate from Miss Hewitt's classes, also in a Sarmi: hers of blue and white horizontal stripes. Two tiny flower girls added immensely to the beauty of the occasion.
The bridegroom was attended by Stan Rumbough, who has recently moved to Palm Beach.
