Wetmore Spectator, November 25, 19098939
Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1909, a very pretty wedding took place at Wetmore in the pleasant home of Alfred Hazeltine, the contracting parties being Miss Delpha Hazeltine and Edward R. Powers. Early in the evening, to the strains of Yale Wedding March, played by Mrs. Jay Powers, the young couple were ushered into the parlor to a place under an arch of pink and white and ferns, which had been prepared for the occasion. Miss Delpha looked charming in a white net dress elaborately trimmed, carrying a bouquet of handsome white rosebuds, a fitting emblem of her young and beautiful life. Edward was becomingly arrayed in the conventional black. After the ceremony, which was performed by Rev. Beard of Muscotah, and the most hearty congratulations, we were invited into the dining room where the table was daintily robed in rosebuds, fine linen and silver. A sumptuous meal of four courses was served. After we had done ample justice to the many "goodies" prepared (much to her credit) by Mrs. Moyer, a most estimable lady who has had the care of the Hazeltine home for the past eight years, (Mr. Hazeltine's wife having departed this life a number of years before,) we repaired to the sitting room, where we were most royally entertained by vocal and instrumental music by Mrs. Jay Powers, and readings rendered by George Grubb and his little daughter, Lillian, after which a social time of short duration was enjoyed, and then we hastened away to catch our train for home with sweet memories of the happy occasion, and hoping their future life might be as bright and beautiful as their wedding day and its surroundings.
Thursday, Nov. 18, a reception was given the young couple by the groom's parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Powers of Netawaka. This, too, was a joyful time, and a long day of merry-making, as a part of the company came from Wetmore and did not get away until the 11 o'clock train at night. Dinner and supper were served in the Powers home. The table was loaded with good things to eat, and as we heard the different remarks in regard to tight clothing, and that it would be hard to come down to common living again, we are satisfied that all had their appetites thoroughly appeased. The evening brough a greater part of the young people of the town to call upon the young guests. Some of them came as a chivaria party and others came as a serenade party, which was much appreciated and enjoyed.
Saturday noon the young couple, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Powers, left for Wetmore, their future home, and as the train rolled away bearing the precious lives of the loved ones, we said in our hearts, "May God enter their new home and direct their steps."
