Cecil Rhodes Reid — the father of Reid-Hillview Airport — died Thursday of cancer. He was 81.
A lifelong aviation enthusiast, Mr. Reid began flying airplanes at age 18 and had already founded one airport in San Jose by the time he opened Reid-Hillview Airport in 1940.
"He loved to fly .... It was exciting then, really adventurous. It was like aerospace today. Those flying were seen as real risk-takers," said Daniel Reid of his father's days as a pilot in the 1920's.
Born in Angels Camp, on Jan. 5, 1908, Mr. Reid came to San Jose in 1923 to work as a machinist and die maker for the American Can Co.
It was during those years in San Jose that Mr. Reid developed his love for flying, his family said.
"He was a poor kid who came from Angels Camp .... He lived with an uncle, hung around the airport and learned how to fly when he was 18," Daniel Reid said.
In 1934, Mr. Reid co-founded Garden City Airport, which existed until 1939 when it was shut down to make room for what is now Highway 101.
Mr. Reid then founded Reid-Hillview Airport in 1940, where he served as airport manager for 25 years. Mr. Reid was also co-owner of the airport.
"It was mostly dairies out there; there weren't any orchards because it was flood land. They paid $9,000 for the original 54 acres," Daniel Reid said.
"He always wore white overalls and a red cap so that pilots could see him when they were landing. Everybody loved him."
During World War II, Mr. Reid worked for the Civil Aeronautics Administration, where he was in charge of aircraft maintenance for Navy planes.
Mr. Reid is survived by his wife, Dorothy; a son, Daniel of Klamath Falls, Ore.; a daughter, Maureen of Kelseyville, two sisters, Bertha Reid of Railroad Flat, and Carolyn Dawson of Denver; and four grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Oak Hill Funeral Home in San Jose.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Crippled Children, 1701 19th Ave., San Francisco 94122.
