Miss Rhodes Weds Alden McKellar In North Carolina

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Robert Rhodes announce the marriage of the daughter, Helen Harwell Rhodes, to Alden Scott McKellar of Eagle Pass, Texas, Sunday, March 26 at the Presbyterian church at Chapel Hill, N. C.

Mrs. McKellar attended the University of Arkansas for two years. She was a member of Chi Omega. For the pat two years she has been attending the University of North Carolina, where she will graduate in June.

Mr. McKellar is the son of Mr. and Mrs. David Skeen McKellar of the Mariposa Ranch of Muzquiz, Coahuila, Mexico, and San Antonio, and the brother of David H. McKellar, who married Miss Mary Elizabeth Rhodes, sister of the bride. He attended Texas A. and M., and will be inducted into the Marines this month.

Mr. and Mrs. Rhodes, who have been in Goldsboro, N. C., were in Chapel Hill for the wedding.

Mr. McKellar, 80, died March 1, 2001, in Colorado Springs. He was a rancher.

He was born Oct. 9, 1920, in Eagle Pass, Texas, to David Skene and Sarah (Scott) McKellar, who are deceased. He was married March 26, 1944, to Helen Rhodes.

Mr. McKellar is survived by his wife; a son, H. Anderson; two daughters, Elizabeth Morris and Catherine Hegewald; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, David; and a sister, Mollie Mary Beidiger.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Grace Episcopal Church, 601 N. Tejon St. Burial will be at Chapel of Our Savior, 8 Fourth St. Cappadona's Alternative Funeral Service, 3407 N. El Paso St., 520-1817, is handling arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Manitou Springs Public Library, 701 Manitou Ave., Manitou Springs 80829, or a charity of the giver's choice.

Helen Rhodes McKellar passed away March 17, 2020 after enjoying life for almost 97 years. She was born in Golden Lake, Arkansas on June 5, 1923 and raised in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Helen attended the University of Arkansas and graduated from the University of North Carolina. In 1944 she married Alden "Mac" McKellar and after a few years of Marine Corps life, they moved to Mexico where they lived in Mexico City, Sabinas, Coahuila and on the family ranch. Thirty-five years later, they moved to Colorado Springs to enjoy the mountains. Alden and Helen enjoyed spending summers at their cabin near Creede, Colorado. Helen was an avid reader, enjoyed bridge, played the piano and organ, was an excellent cook and seamstress plus knitted sweaters, dresses, shawls, blankets and anything else to keep her friends and family warm. She also knitted outfits for premature babies at the hospital and volunteered at the Manitou Springs Library.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, parents Bob and Elizabeth Rhodes and siblings Robert and Betty. She is survived by her children Andy McKellar, Elizabeth Morris and Cathy Hegewald; grandchildren Carolyn Godavitarne, Scott Morris, Jeffrey Hegewald and John McKellar plus great grandchildren Alex and Emma Godavitarne, Jack and Max Morris and Hazel and Ben Hegewald.

Services will be held on Sunday, June 6, 3 PM at the Chapel of our Savior Columbarium, 8 Fourth St, Colorado Springs, Colorado, 80906. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be set to Grace and St. Stephens Episcopal Church, 601-631 N. Tejon St. Colorado Springs, CO, 80903.
