Asheville Editor Is Dead At 53

ASHEVILLE - James M. Rogers, 53, who had served Asheville's daily newspapers for more than a quarter century, the last two years as editor of The Times, died Wednesday of leukemia.

He has suffered from the blood disease for the last four years, and was able to perform his duties as editorial writer until four weeks ago, when he was admitted to Memorial Mission Hospital, where he died. He was named editor of the Afternoon Times in December of 1961 after having served in various news capacities of the jointly owned Times and The Asheville Citizen. He began his newspaper career as a reporter on The Times in 1936 and later became assistant sports editor ad assistant city editor. He was promoted to city editor in 1949 and to managing editor in 1950.

Rogers, a native of Portland, Ore., who spent most of his life in Buncombe County, served two years in the Navy in World War II. He was educated in Asheville's public schools and the universities of Tennessee and North Carolina. He was graduated from North Carolina in 1935 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism.

Survivors include the widow, the former Joyce Sayre, two sons and one brother.

The funeral services will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m., at First Presbyterian Church.

JOYCE ROGERS

Joyce Sayre Rogers, 82, of 514 Chunn's Cove Road, Asheville, died Friday, June 13, 1997, in a local nursing center.

Mrs. Rogers was a lifelong resident of Buncombe County and was the daughter of the late Judge Sam M. and Minnie Clarke Cathey. She was preceded in death by her husband, James M. "Jimmy" Rogers, former editor of the Asheville Times, who died in 1964, and by a brother William C. Sayre. She was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church and the American Association of University Women.

She is survived by her sons, James M. Rogers Jr. of Asheville and William C. Rogers of Columbia, S.C.; four grandchildren, David, Joyce, Heather and Charles Rogers; one great-grandchild, Garret, and three nieces.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Luke's Episcopal Church with the Rev. John Stephen Hines officiating.
