The wedding of Miss Minnie Batgin Clarke, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles D. Clarke, to Mr. B. Franklin Sayre takes place this afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Christian church. The ceremony will be performed by Rev. Helsabeck. The maid of honor will be Miss Clarke, a sister of the bride. A sister of the groom, Miss Margaret Sayre, has been chosen by the bride as bridesmaid. The best man will be Mr. W. J. O'Donnell of Richmond, and the groomsman, Mr. Ralph Detmore. After the ceremony Mr. and Mrs. Sayre will leave for Canton, where they will be given a reception by the groom's mother, Mrs. W. A. Sayre. Mr. Sayre is connected with the Champion Fibre company in a responsible capacity and the young people will make their home in Canton. After the rehearsal of the wedding last evening the wedding party were entertained informally by Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Clarke at their home on Asheland avenue. A hundred and fifty invitations have been issued to the wedding.

Samuel Cathey, City Solicitor, Weds Mrs. Sayre

Samuel M. Cathey, city solicitor, was married to Mrs. Minnie C. Sayre Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the study room of the First Presbyterian church by the Rev. R. F. Campbell, pastor. There were no attendants at the simple ceremony, only a few friends being present.

The bride, a widow, is the daughter of the late Charles Clark, who wa with the Southern railway for many years and lives at 211 Charlotte street. She has been in the registry division of the Asheville post office for several years.

The bridegroom is the son of Homer Cathey, well known resident of Buncombe county. He was elected city solicitor at the last election. A member of the firm of Cathey and McKinney, he has offices in the Jackson building. He is blind.

Mr. and Mrs. Cathey will make their home at 211 Charlotte street.

Asheville Judge Dies At Age 76

ASHEVILLE (AP) — Judge Sam M. Cathey, Asheville's noted blind judge, died at the age of 76 Thursday night after an illness.

Cathey, was chairman of the State Blind Commission from its organization in 1935 to 1968. He was judge of the Asheville City Police Court for 39 years.

Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at Central Methodist Church.

In 1954 President Dwight Eisenhower awarded Cathey the President's Plaque as the national handicapped man for the year.

In 1962 he received the Shotwell Memorial Award for distinguished service from the American Asoociation of Workers for the Blind. He was the only person ever to receive both awards.

Judge Cathey is survived by his widow.

Young Cathey was a superintendent in his father's construction business when, at 19, he was blinded by a dynamite explosion.

He enrolled at the State School for the Blind and later was graduated from the University of North Carolina. He passed the state bar examination in 1924 and was elected solicitor of the Asheville City Couty in 1927. He became judge in 1931 and was reelected every four years since.

Services Friday For Mrs. Cathey

Services for Mrs. Minnie Clarke Cathey of 26 Carolina Apts., who died Tuesday, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Campbell Chapel of the First Presbyterian Church. The Revs. A. Allen Gardner, J. Edward Bates and Leroy Secrest will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

A native of Asheville and a daughter of the late Charles D. and Agnes Joyce Clarke, she was the widow of Judge Sam M. Cathey. She was a member of the Professional Business Club and was superintendent of the Postal Finance Department of the Asheville Postal Service.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Joyce Rogers and Mrs. Frances Thomas Sayre of Asheville; a sister, Mrs. Helen McClure of Asheville; five grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Morris Funeral Home.
