Lieut. Richard M. Scott, former tennis champion of Colorado and well-known newspaper man, returned to the city yesterday from overseas, where he has been for fourteen months with the American expeditionary force. He was for five months on the front as an aviation observer, and has two boche planes to his credit.
Scott went to Fort Riley a little more than two years ago and attended the first officers' training camp, from which he emerged with a second lieutenant's commission. Until Dec. 1, 1917, he was with the Eighty-ninth division as an infantry officer.
Hen then volunteered as observer and began training at Fort Sill. He finished his training at Tours, France, and went to the front with the French Fourth army in July. He fought in Champagne with the 135th squadron, the first unit to use the Liberty motor. Later he fought at St. Mihiel and in all had about a dozen encouters in the air with boche aviators.
After the armistice Scott was sent to Valdahon, near the Swiss border, where he was chief observer in an instruction center for aviators and artillerymen.
Altho Scott is an ardent tennis fan, when confronted with the alternatives of going to Nice for a big tournament or coming home, he came home.
As he was boarding the boat, Lorraine, at La Havre, for the voyage home, local American officials rushed down to the dock with a promotion for Scott. He came home a first lieutenant.

Rocky Mountain News, October 11, 193311429
R. M. Scott Jr., financial editor of The Rocky Mountain News since December, 1926, yesterday announced his retirement from The News, and the opening of an investment counsel service, specializing in long-term planning for investors in the Denver territory.
The service offered, Scott announced, will follow methods employed by investment counsel organizations in New York and Boston, where the profession has developed rapidly over the last 10 years.
These organizations, while stressing the need for careful selection of individual securities, attach equal importance to the balancing of different types of holdings to afford protection against changes in industrial, financial and general economic trends. They also emphasize the value of close personal contact between counsel and clients in order that investment programs may be worked out to suit the needs of the individual.
One of the New York organizations, in a recently published statement, declared that while the long-term point of view should always be paramount, this by no means implies the idea of permanency in any investment. The statement added that every security, however impregnable it may seem, must be continuously studied and re-evaluated in the light of changing economic and business conditions.
Scott's term as financial editor of The News covered the long prosperity era culminating in 1929, the depression and bear market reaching a low point in the summer of 1932, and the irregular recovery of the last year. From 1924 to the end of 1926 he served as industrial commissioner of the Denver Chamber of Commerce, conducting statistical research to determine the most promising opportunities for industrial development in the Rocky Mountain region.
Scott is located in the Denver National Bldg. His activities, he announced, will be limited to advisory service, as he will not deal in securities.
