Obituaries

Harrisonburg Rockingham Register, November 2, 18762618

In our paper of last week the death of Abram Smith was briefly announced under our obituary head. His death deserves more than a passing notice. Mr. Smith was, until within some years back, a resident of Rockingham, and occupied a position of prominence. For many years he was a Justice of the Peace and Sheriff of the county. As a Magistrate he was noted for the justice of his decisions. He invariably based his judicial decisions upon the simple questions of right and justice, and as he remarked, he did not care a straw for the law when it interfered with justice.

Mr. Smith spent the most of his long life in Harrisonburg, a good portion of which time he was engaged in the mercantile business. Some years before the war he moved to Harrison county, West Virginia, and after the war he went to Madison county, where he died. Mrs. Smith, his wife, preceded him but a few weeks to the grave.
