He was born Oct. 30, 1921, in Neillsville, the eldest son of Leon and Nellie (Pexsa) Stanley. He attended grade school in a one-room schoolhouse, the Reed School, and graduated from Neillsville High School. He received his B. S. Degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1946 and his M. S. Degree from Butler University, Indianapolis.
Duane was in the U. S. Air Force from 1943 to 1945 and was in the 23rd squadron, 5th Bomb Group of the 13th Air Force in WWII. A pilot of the B24 Liberator bomber, he served 32 missions in the Pacific Theatre.
After his service, he married Grace Himes from Jamestown, NY, June 15, 1946, and then taught agriculture at Edgerton and Wonewoc. He moved to Indianapolis in 1957 and taught at General Motors Institute before teaching science in Knightstown, IN, and then teaching at Pike High School from 1961 to 1979, first as a science teacher and later as planetarium director.
He enjoyed fishing, gardening, humor, reading, basketball, softball, baseball, bowling, camping, canoeing and traveling with his wife to all 50 states, Europe, and cruises to Central America and through the Panama Canal. He had a great sense of humor and a love of nature and the outdoors.
He is survived by his wife, Grace; daughter, Kathryn (Tony) Imler and their daughter, Laura; his brothers, Lawrence (Cathryn) and Dale and their families.
He was predeceased by his oldest daughter, Marjorie Ann McKee, and one brother, Ray Stanley.
