Lawrence Frank Stanley

Lawrence Frank Stanley, 87, died Monday, March 14, 2011, after a long illness.

He was born in 1923 on his parents' farm near Neillsville. Lawrence attended Reed School, graduated from Neillsville High School in 1941 and then completed the University of Wisconsin's Agricultural Short Course. He and his wife, Catherine, owned and operated a dairy farm in the Neillsville area for several years. They moved to Marshfield in 1966.

Lawrence was a talented machinist and was the "Go To Guy" when something was needed to be made or repaired. His work took him all over Canada and the United States, including a winter stint at Prudhoe Bay. During retirement, Lawrence refurbished antique gasoline engines, showing them and his antique vehicles at a variety of local events. Lawrence and Catherine traveled extensively with their camper and loved to ride their motorcycles and snowmobiles.

Lawrence is survived by his wife of 61 years, Catherine Stanley; and their children: Margaret (Gordon, deceased) Bartelt of Little Rock, Ark.; Chuck "Charles" Stanley and Cheri Langreck of Stevens Point and their children Heidi, Samantha and Kora; Mary Stanley of Marshfield; Dave Stanley and Celia Sturzl-Stanley of Marshfield and their daughter, Gretchen Stanley; and Jim Stanley of Marshfield.

Dale Stanley, Lawrence's brother of Grayslake, Ill., also survives him.

Lawrence was predeceased by his parents, Leon and Nellie Stanley; and two brothers, Duane and Ray Stanley.

The family, abiding by Lawrence's wishes, will hold a private ceremony to scatter his remains at "The Farm" on a warm summer day. No flowers please. Instead, memorials may be made to an individual's favorite charity or Operations Smile, 6435 Tidewater Drive, Norfolk VA 23509.

Mid-Wisconsin Cremation Society is assisting the family.
