Newell W. Strother

Newell Wallace Strother, 77, of Arroyo Grande, died early today in a hospital in Sedelia, Mo. His body was removed to Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home, Marshall, Mo. where a service is scheduled at 10 a.m. Thursday.

Mr. Strother was vice-president of the Port San Luis Harbor Commission, a retired newspaperman and former owner of the Arroyo Grande Herald-Recorder weekly newspaper. He also served for many years as an Arroyo Grande city planning commissioner, was a former Rotary Club president and was active in many other civic and fraternal organizations including the Masonic lodge.

A native of Missouri, Mr. Strother resided in Fresno for many years before purchasing the Arroyo Grande paper in 1939. He published and edited the weekly until its sale in 1959.

Mr. Strother returned to Missouri on a visit in May and was stricken with his final illness while visiting relatives there. He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Grace Yancey, two nephews and a niece, all of Missouri, and other relatives. he was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia, who died in May, 1973.
