John F. Wells, 88, of Lebanon died Saturday at his home.
He was born in Huntington Park, Calif., the son of John and Gladys (Houston) Wells. John moved to Lebanon with his family in 1930 and has resided here since that time. He attended Rock Hill School and was the last boy to graduate there before its closing in 1934.
John married Lisette Niemann in 1947 in Albany. John worked at the Plywood Mill and owned OK Tire Store, which he sold to Les Schwab Tire Company in 1966. He also owned Wells Trucking and later drove log truck for Wimer Logging until his retirement in 1980.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing and spent many vacations at Paulina Lake. Since his retirement, he has enjoyed the winters in Quartzsite, Ariz., where he attended the rock and gem shows. He became interested in lapidary work and enjoyed building his own machines. John had attended the Covenant Lutheran Church in Quartzsite and Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Lebanon.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Lisette, of Lebanon; son Randy, wife Lee Ann and granddaughters Angela and Aimee Wells, all of Portland; grandson Jason Wells and wife Jewel of Seattle; great-grandchildren Lilly, Ion and Thetan; brother Robert Wells of Lebanon; and many nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by son Rodney, his parents, sisters Gladys Andreason and Vega Gatchel, and brother Francis Clinton.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church. Private burial will be at the Lebanon IOOF Cemetery.
