Joseph R. Sheppard, 66, of 183 Chicago Ave., died at 5:20 a.m. today in General Hospital. He had been ill since Saturday. A retired mechanical engineer, he came to Marion in 1950 from Cleveland.
Born Jan. 1, 1889, in Philadelphia, Pa., he was the son of Michael and Elmira Crampp Sheppard.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Sarah P. Sheppard, whom he married June 2, 1934, in Wisconsin; a stepson, B. David Cross of 301 Johnson St.; three step-grandchildren, Michael, Linda Pauline and Mark Allen Cross, and two sisters.
Private funeral services will be conducted Monday at 10:30 a.m. in the Schaffner - Denzer Funeral Home on E. Center St. Rev. John Blair will officiate. Burial will be in Chapel Heights Memory Gardens. Friends may call at the funeral home after 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

MACEDONIA — Philip L. Haymes Sr., 78, who headed the United Milk Products Co. in Cleveland until his retirement four years ago, died Wednesday at Cleveland Clinic Hospital after a short illness.
A native of Chicago, Mr. Haymes received an award from Ohio State University's Dairy Technology Department in 1957 for his outstanding contributions to the dairy industry. He lived at 8660 Shepard rd.
He served on several wartime and regulatory committees and appeared before General Assembly and Congressional committees on legislation pertaining to the dairy industry.
Mr. Haymes was a member of the 3-man advisory group of former Agriculture Secretary Ezra Taft Benson and was chairman of the United States Dairy Association's advisory committee on research and marketing from 1955 to 1956.
His first work in dairy food regulation came in 1923 when he helped with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's original milk bread standards. He assisted in standardizing dairy regulations under the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act in 1939.
Throughout World War II, he served on the War Food Administration's committee representing the evaporated milk industry.
In 1952, he was chosen to represent the dairy industry before U. S. Senate and House committees on termination of controls under the Defense Act.
He leaves his wife, Sarah; a son, Philip L. Jr. of Sarasota, Fla., and brother, Ernest of Cleveland.
Private services will be Saturday at Northfield-Macedonia Cemetery.

MACEDONIA — Sara P. Wise Haymes, 81, formerly of Macedonia, died Tuesday at the Marion Community Hospital.
Born in Macedonia, Mrs. Haymes moved to Marion six years ago.
She leaves her son, David Cross, Marion; brother, Jack Wise, Cleveland; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1:30 p. m. Friday at the Johnson Northfield Center Chapel where friends may call from3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Northfield Macedonia cemetery.
