Lt. (j.g.)Vernon E. Reynolds, 25, Naval Pilot, crashed near Wildwood, off the coast of New Jersey, at 8 A.M. Saturday and the body was found as 12, midnight. His mother, Mrs. Linnie Rutter of Minatare, was informed by the Navy Department Sunday of the fatal crash.
Lt. Reynolds was born in Bayard, May 21, 1919, and spent his boyhood in western Nebraska and Wyoming vicinity, going to Kansas several years ago, where he was graduated from Saint Francis High School, and attended Kansas State College at Manhattan, and Wyoming University at Laramie. He played football, basketball, and participated in track at college and was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity.
Lt. Reynolds volunteered for flight training in Sept., 1941, received preliminary instruction at the U. S. Naval Reserve Base, Kansas City, Kansas, and was transferred to the "University of the Air", at Corpus Christi, Texas, where he was commissioned an Ensign and received his wings September 25, 1942.
He spent about a year in Puerto Rico and British West Indies, and was advanced from Ensign to Lieutenant (j.g) and was transferred a few months ago to a New Jersey base.
Besides his mother, he is survived by one sister, Mrs. Bernice Wickard of Richmond, Calif., three brothers, Harold E. Reynolds, Denver; Robert S. Reynolds, Seattle; Bion J. Reynolds, Naval Training Station, Great Lakes, Ill., and a step-mother, Mrs. Bess Reynolds of St. Francis, Kansas. An aunt, Miss Marion Reynolds, and two uncles, M. S. Reynolds and H. G. Reynolds, all of Bayard and other relatives also survive.
His father, Eugene Reynolds, one sister, Mrs. Esther Wickard, and one brother, Dale, preceded him in death.
Funeral rites and interment will take place at Saint Francis, Kansas, in accordance with a request he made should he meet death, and on Friday, June 9.
