Mr. Earl Ballou and Miss Rose Heldt were quietly married today at Council Bluffs, the parents of both bride and groom being present at the ceremony. Earl is the elder son of Mr. and Mrs. E. S. Ballou, and is a young man of exceptional character and ability. Miss Heldt is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Heldt, of Yutan, who are well and favorably known in this vicinity. Mr. Heldt being a former commissioner of Saunders county. Both of the young people are well known here. Earl is a graduate of the Ashland school, class of 1922, and also attended the state university in the agricultural department. They will make their home on the E. S. Ballou farm for the present.

Miss Olive Fletcher entertained a group of ladies Tuesday afternoon at her home in honor of Miss Rose Heldt, whose marriage to Mr. Earl Ballou occurs today. There were about twenty present, the guests being relatives and girlhood friends of Miss Heldt. The house was prettily decorated in golden rod and garden flowers, a color scheme of red and yellow being artistically carried out. The afternoon was pleasantly spent with social chat and visiting and the gifts, which were of a miscellaneous nature, were presented to the honor guest. A dainty lunch of ice cream and cake was served.

Mr. and Mrs. Earl Ballou were host and hostess at a party dance that was given at the Memphis Hall Wednesday evening. The High school orchestra of Ashland furnished the music and over a hundred friends and relatives, young and old, were present. Light refreshments of ice cream and wafers were served and a delightful time is reported. A purse of silver was presented to Mr. and Mrs. Ballou as a token of the love and esteem of their many friends. Earl was married to Miss Rose Heldt, of Yutan, Thursday of last week at Council Bluffs.

Earl Ballou, who has been living northwest of Ashland for sever years, will go to Norfolk in the near future were he will have charge of a distributing station for Massy-Harris company. Mr. and Mrs. Ballou will be greatly missed by their friends in Ashland and vicinity but wishes for their success and happiness will go with them to their new home.

Earl B. Ballou, 57, of Fairfield Iowa, a former Ashland resident, died Saturday, Aug. 20, at the Bloomfield, Iowa hospital after an illness of 10 weeks with leukemia. He had been critically ill for 10 days. Funeral services were held at the First Presbyterian church in Fairfield Monday afternoon with Dr. Curtis R. Douglas officiating. Mrs. Leroy Simpson was organist. Pallbearers were Merlin Samuelson, Kenneth Altman, Robert Brown, Walter Harrison, Burton Wookey, and Glen Stanford; and the 15 employees of the Jefferson Motor Co. who served as honorary pallbearers. Committal services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at the Ashland Cemetery by the Rev. Walter Neth of Clarks, former pastor at Cedar Hill Methodist church. Pallbearers here were Gilbert Raasch, Guy McReynolds, John Karloff, William McInerney, W.E. Andrews, and Richard Clark. Mr. Ballou was born March 29, 1903, at Ashland, the son of Emor L. and Catherine Fletcher Ballou. He was raised and educated here. On Sept. 25, 1924, he married Rose R. Heldt of Yutan. He had been in the car business at Fairfield, Iowa, for 20 years, except for 3-1/2 years spent on a farm near Ashland in the middle 1940’s. He was a member and trustee of the First Presbyterian church at Fairfield, the Fairfield Chamber of Commerce, the Fairfield Industrial Development Corporation, the B.P.O. E., the F.O.E., Izaak Walton League, and the Walton Club. He was a partner in the Jefferson Motor Co. He is survived by his wife, Rose; one daughter, Mrs. Harry Kenneth (Catherine) Marcy of Ashland; one son, Emor S. Ballou of LaGrange, Ill.; four grandchildren; and one brother, Otis M. Ballou, of Ashland. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.

Rose R. Ballou, 92, of Ashland, formerly of Fairfield, Iowa, died Friday, Oct. 25, 1996, at Community Care of America in Ashland.
Rose Heldt was born Aug. 14, 1904, in Yutan. She married Earl Ballou Sept. 25, 1924, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She had been a retail sales clerk in a clothing and furniture store. Her husband died Aug. 20, 1960.
Survivors include a son, Emor Ballou, of Fairfield, Iowa; a daughter, Catherine (Mrs. H.K.) Marcy of Ashland; a sister, Erma (Mrs. Charles) Williams of Papillion; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by three brothers and five sisters.
A private memorial service will be at a later date. There will be no visitation. Marcy Mortuary in Ashland is in charge of arrangements.
