Helen Maxine Dexter

Dec. 10, 1920 — Aug. 25, 1992

ALBANY — Helen Maxine Dexter, 71, died Tuesday.

A native of Falls City, she grew up in Nashville (Lincoln County), Dallas and Portland before moving to King Hill, Idaho, in 1946.

In 1959, she began spending summers in Oregon and winters with her family in Arizona. She worked as a saw maker and a woodworker. She had many collections.

On July 11, 1938, she married Elwood Narin Taylor in Dallas; they later divorced. She married Orin George Dexter on March 8, 1946, in Vancouver, Wash.; they later divorced.

The city of Buell and Buell Park were named after her family. She was a member of the Friendship Baptist Church in Hope, Ariz. She enjoyed the outdoors and motorcycle rides in the Arizona desert.

Survivors include her daughters, Jacqueline Lee Martin of Albany, LaVerne Ann Phillips of Reno, Nev., and Orina Georgia Dexter of Henderson, Nev.; sons, Charles Elwood Taylor of Tigard, Lawrence Wayne Taylor of Bend and Derryl Rae Dexter-Kupersmith of Hood River; sisters, Vivian Victorine Shapely, Alta LaVerne Carson and Carlotta June Lucht, all of Oregon and Arizona; 20 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will begin at 2 p.m. today at Willamette Memorial Park. Arrangements are by Fisher mortuary.
