Ralph D. Burns, Sr., 49, of 120 Carr Avenue, Milton, died in the Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg Friday afternoon. He had been a patient there since July 13 and previously had been hospitalized. He had been ill since April of 1962.
Mr. BUrns was born in Milton on April 14, 1914, a son of Harvey Burns of Lincoln Street and the late Mrs. Grace Dagnell Burns. He had been employed at the ACF plant at Milton for a number of years. He was a faithful member of St. Peter's Evangelical United Brethren Church of Milton. He belonged to Milton lodge of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He was a member of the Milton Fish and Game Association.
Surviving are his wife, two sons, William of Lompoc, Calif.; Miss Patricia Burns, at home; town grandchildren, his father and two brothers, Nathaniel and Lloyd Burns, of Milton. His wife is the former Melva Waughen.
Services will be held Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Dale E. Ranch parlors at Milton. In the absence of his pastor, Rev. Herbert E. Entz, who is on a trip to the west coast, the officiating minister will be Rev. Charles Snyder, New Columbia, pastor of the White Dear charge of the EUB Church. Interment will be in Milton Cemetery. Friends will be received Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the parlors at Milton.

MILTON — Melva M. Burns, 89, formerly of 503 Center St. Milton passed away on Friday, July 17, 2009, at the Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg.
She was born Nov. 26, 1919, at Strawberry Ridge, Montour County; a daughter of the late William H. and Martha H. (Reeder) Waughen. On June 9, 1937, she married Ralph D. Burns Sr. and they shared 25 years of marriage until his death on Aug. 2, 1963.
She was a homemaker until all of her children entered school. She then worked for many years at the J.J. Newberry store in the infant's department, and later as a nurse's aide at the former Gold Star Nursing Home on Broadway in Milton until her retirement.
She loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and spent many years as an active member of St. Peter's United Methodist Church, Milton. She especially enjoyed teaching Sunday school to preschoolers, helping with church suppers and making Shrove Tuesday doughnuts and Easter eggs. Melva was the last member of the First Baptist Church in Raeford, N.C.
She enjoyed many activities including sewing, knitting, plastic canvas projects and doing various word puzzles. SHe was an avid reader, especially her Bible and Christian books, both fiction and non-fiction. She loved to cook and bake lots of goodies for family and friends.
She is survived by three children, William of Fort Worth, Texas, Ralph Jr. and wife Karen of Milton, and Patricia of West Milton; six grandchildren, Selena Burns, Rodney Burns, Janine DeShazo, Laurie Purcell, Correy Burns and Shawna Klinefelter; 12 great-Grandchildren; and two brothers, Ceril and Cecil Waughen.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Donald Waughen, and one great-grandson, Eric Burns, in infancy.
In accordance to Melva's wishes there will be no viewing. A visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday followed by a funeral service at 11, at St. Peter's United Methodist Church, 239 Hepburn St., Milton, with the Rev. Will Hallman and the Rev. Ronald E. Landis, officiating. Parking is available in the Rockwell Center parking lot behind the church.
Burial will be in the Milton Cemetery.
Flowers are welcome and memorials in Melva's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Greater Pennsylvania Chapter, 3544 North Progress Ave., Suite 205, Harrisburg, PA 17110-9638.
