Mrs. C. M. Butler entertained yesterday afternoon from 5 to 6 o'clock at her residence, No. 223 South Fifth street, complimentary to her daughter, Mrs. H. Kidd, of Vancouver, B. C., who is here on a visit. She was assisted in receiving by her daughter, Miss Marie Butler. The home was beautifully decorated with Autumn leaves and carnations. Delicious refreshments were served in the dining room. Those serving were Mrs. Warren G. Elliott and Mrs. Edmund l. Prince, assisted by several young ladies. It was a most delightful occasion and a large number were present to enjoy the splendid hospitality of the hostess and to meet Mrs. Kidd.

Miss Marie Butler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Butler, 1808 Market street was very painfully burned early eysterday morning when she attempted to light the gas water heater. Her clothing became ignited and she ran to the back porch of the home where Walter Johnson, engaged in making some repairs on the home, finally managed to extinguish the flames by using his coat, but not until after Miss Butler had been rather severely burned about the body.
Mr. Butler, connected with the Coast Line, was out of the city at the time, being in Richmond on business, but he was summoned by telegraph. Mr. Johnson was painfully burned about the hands. His presence of mind and prompt action doubtless prevented the young woman from receiving very serious injuries.

Miss Marie Butler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Butler, 1808 Market street, died at noon Thursday, as a result of burns received 10 days ago, when her garments became ignited from a broken match, struck for the purpose of lighting a gas heater on the second floor of the home. A heroic effort was made by a workman on the premises at the time to extinguish the flames, which he finall did, but only after his arms and hands had been painfully burned. Miss Butler's injuries were about the head and body.
It was regarded by the family and friends during the past few days that the condition of the young woman was somewhat improved, but early yesterday she became worse and rapidly sank until death at 12 o'clock. The young woman possessed numerous friends in the city, to many of whom the news of her death came as a distinct shock, they not having been advised of the change in her condition during the 12 hours preceding her death.
In addition to the parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Butler, one brother, C. M. Butler, Jr., and one sister, Mrs. Harry Kidd, of Vancouver, B. C., survive. Funeral services will be conducted from the residence this afternoon at 4 o'clock by Rev. A. M. Blackford, rector of St. Paul's church, of which the deceased was a faithful and consistent member. Interment will be made in Oakdale cemetery.
