Pierce Anderson Cassedy, Jr., 78, of Tryon, NC, died Friday, March 23, 2001, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
A native of Short Hills, NJ, and a resident of the Tryon community for 17 years, he was the oldest son of the late Dr. Pierce Anderson Cassedy and Callene Trimmer Thomas Cassedy.
As a boy, Mr. Cassedy studied at the Choir School of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City. He later attended The Pingry School and Amherst College, class of 1943. He served as a US Navy pilot during World War II in the Pacific Theatre, flying at various times the complete repertoire of US Navy planes. He remained active in the Navy Reserves for 20 years as a Lt. Commander.
His career in the textile industry involved extensive international as well as domestic travel, which resulted in many enduring friendships. He was President of Picanol, USA, and later President of Ruti Corporation, both in Charlotte, NC. He retired in 1987 from Sulzer-Ruti, Spartanburg, SC, where he helped the Swiss company place weaving machinery in textile manufacturing operations throughout the US.
Mr. Cassedy had a solid history of community and church involvement wherever he lived. In Tryon, he was very active in Holy Cross Episcopal Church, serving as lector, chalice bearer, treasurer, and a member of the vestry. He volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and coordinated fund-raising activities for the Heart Association. He enjoyed a lifelong association with the Republican party.
Mr. Cassedy was a member of the Tryon Country Club, the Catawba Yacht Club in Lake Wylie, SC, and the Pass-a-Grille Yacht Club in St. Petersburg Beach, FL.
He was an adventurous outdoorsman who enjoyed skiing, hiking, canoe camping and golf. But, above all, he loved sailing and flying. He was an avid reader. And music - jazz, classical, big band - was a passionate part of his everyday life.
Throughout his travels, his enthusiasm for different cultures, languages and people never ceased. He never met a stranger and truly lived life to the fullest. His family and many friends will always remember his tireless, selfless, cheerful giving.
