In a candlelight service at Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on Jan. 17, Miss Grayce Jeanette Greene, formerly of Racine, became the wife of John Rickard Elwell. Palms, white gladioli, white roses and pompons decorated Park Temple Methodist Church in Fort Lauderdale where the daughter of Mrs. Carlyle S. Greene and the late Carlyle S. Greene repeated her vows. Her husband is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Nels S. Jacobsen of Fort Lauderdale.
Mr. and Mrs. Ewald Zinnen of Racine were among the out-of-town guests at the wedding and reception, held at the bride's home following the 6 p. m. rites. Given in marriage by her mother, the bride wore a gown of white satin with long sleeves, sweetheart neckline, embroidered net trim on the shoulders, and long train. Her white net veil was of fingertip length and fell from a ruffled net crown. In her bouquet were white carnations, tuberoses, and white orchids. The bride, who is a graduate of Washington Park High School here and who attended Vanderbilt University at Nashville, Tenn., and Miami University, chose a sorority sister in Alpha Omicron Phi, Miss Sue Coslett of Atlanta, Ga., as her maid of honor, and her sister, Marilyn as her bridesmaid. Their gowns, in pink net and blue net, had embroidered peplums. They wore matching gloves and Juliet caps and held colonial bouquets.
After a trip to Nassau and the Bahamas, Mr. and Mrs. Elwell will reside temporarily at 310 Lido Dr. in Fort Lauderdale. The bridegroom, who served three and a half years in the Navy, is continuing his studies at Miami U. His attendants included Fed Odum, the best man; William Gould, groomsman, and Jack Peavy and Frank Faust, ushers.

Elwell, John Rickard, died May 20, 2009 in Deland, Florida, at the age of 84. He was born August 14, 1924 in Minneapolis MN. He was predeceased by his son John Rickard Elwell, Jr.; daughter Margaret Anne Elwell; his first wife Grayce J. Elwell and 2nd wife Loretta Wagner Elwell. He is survived by his daughter Elizabeth Alden Elwell; his son Edwin Carlyle Elwell; his daughter Katherine Victoria Ehle and Deborah Lynn Elwell; 5 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He was a pioneer in the city of Fort Lauderdale after moving to Fort Lauderdale in the 1930s. He will be remembered for his many contributions to Fort Lauderdale and Broward County, if only by his family and friends. He was a true gentleman in every respect of the word and admired by most, if not all his peers in the construction industry and certainly all of his classmates from Fort Lauderdale High School (Class of 1942) and many of the other early pioneers of his great City. He dropped out of high school (at the age of 17) his senior year, to serve in the United States Navy and fought in the Pacific Theater as a troop transport pilot and radioman. His dedication to his Country and the City that he loved so much, will never be truly remembered except by those who knew him the best - always helping others in need and dedicated to the common good of all the citizens of Fort Lauderdale, Beech Mountain, NC and Deland, FL, while remaining anonymous and shying away from publicity! He will truly be missed by all who knew him as he truly believed in the good of others before his own benefit.
