John H. Ervine, formerly a well-known resident of the Ottobine section, died on January 21, at his home near Fairfield, Rockbridge County, says the Rockbridge County News. Mr. Ervine had been ill for several months.
His age was eighty-six years. he was a son of the late Milton Ervine, and was born near Bridgewater January 28, 1831. His wife was Miss Ellen J. Weir, of Rockbridge County. During the War between the States, Mr. Ervine was a member of the Fourteenth Virginia Cavalry. He was wounded in the battle of Petersburg, and later was captured and held a prisoner at Point Lookout for three months. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church.
Surviving Mr. Ervine, besides his wife, are five children, J. Weir Ervine, Misses Margaret, Hope and Bess Ervine, Mrs. D. J. Whipple, and one sister, Mrs. William J. Houston, all of Fairfield.
The funeral took place from the New Providence Presbyterian Church. Services were conducted by Rev. H. W. McGlaughlin.

Fairfield, Ht. 1., Aug. 24.—Mrs. John H. Ervine passed quietly away at her home near Fairfield Monday evening at 6:30 o'clock. Her death was due to the infirmities of old age, being in her ninetieth year.
Mrs. Ervine was born and reared near Raphine, in this county, the eldest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Weir. She was an estimable woman and much beloved by all who had the pleasure of her acquaintance.
She leaves one son and four daughters, Misses Margaret W., Hess, and John Weir Ervine, of near Fairfield; and Mrs. D. J. Whipple and Miss Hope Ervine, of Brownsburg; also a granddaughter, Miss Fay Thompson, whom she reared from infancy; also twelve other grandchildren and three great grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Lyle, Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Culton, of near Raphine.
The funeral was held Tuesday at four p. m. from her late residence. The service was conducted by the Rev. H. W. McLaughlin, of New Providence church, of which she was a member. Burial was in the cemetery of said church by the side of her husband who preceded her to the grave some years ago. The floral offerings were numerous and beautiful which attested to the popularity of the deceased.
