Marriage Announcements and News

Minneapolis Morning Tribune, September 12, 19285357

THE VEIL OF BRUSSELS LACE which had been worn by her cousins, Mrs. Douglas Gilmore Anderson (Catherine Sweet) of Detroit, Mich., and Mrs. Albert Bailey Potter (Margaret Sweet) of Hubbard Woods, Ill., at their weddings was worn by Miss Elizabeth Grierson, daughter of Mrs. Paul Grierson of Mankato, at her marriage Monday evening to Mr. Arthur Frederick Giddings, son of Judge and Mrs. Arthur E. Giddings of Anoka. Dr. L. L. Levering, chaplain of Shattuck Military academy, Faribault, read the service at 7:30 o'clock in the living room of Mrs. Grierson's home, Mankato. Only relatives of the bridal couple attended the ceremony, which was followed by a reception for 100 guests.

Japanese lilies, honeysuckle, and ferns banked the improvised altar for the wedding, while tall baskets of gladioli with lighted tapers were used throughout the room. Miss Mary Lock Petermann of Calumet, Mich., attended Miss Grierson as maid of honor, while Judge Giddings was his son's best man. The ushers were Mrs. William Hawkes of Faribault; Messrs. William Graham, Jr., and Eugene Hitch of Brainerd, and three cousins of the bride, Mr. Albert Petermann, Jr., of Calumet, Mich.; Mr. John Sweet, Swampscott, Mass., and Mr. William Thielman, Calument, Mich.

The bride, who entered with her uncle, Mr. Alfred Sweet of Swampscott, Mass., wore a gown of white satin made with long closefitting sleeves and a long waistline with a full skirt showing an uneven hem. Duchess lace formed the yoke and cuffs. A band of orange blossoms held her veil in cap effect, and she carried a bouquet of Madonna lilies, asters, and lilies of the valley.

Light blue taffeta fashioned the tiered frock worn by Miss Petermann. Her arm bouquet was composed of garden flowers.

Receiving the guests with the bride and bridegroom at the reception were Mrs. Grierson, Judge and Mrs. Giddings, and Miss Petermann. Mrs. Grierson's gown of flesh pink chiffon was studded with brilliants, and she wore a corsage of pink roses.

Blue velvet fashioned the gown worn by Mrs. Giddings, who had a corsage of roses. Colored lights illuminated the garden of the house and the adjoining garden of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hoerr, uncle and aunt of the bride, at whose home a wedding luncheon was served. Silver flowers and a mound of snow on the mountain centered the bride's table, which was lighted with white tapers tied with tulle and set in silver holders.

Mr. Giddings and his bride came to Minneapolis Monday and will depart tuesday from New York, from where they will sail Saturday on board the Minnesota for Paris. They will make their home there for a year. For travel the bride is wearing a black and white tweed suit with white satin blouse, small black hat of soleil velour, and a silver fox scarf.

Among the Minneapolis people who were guests at the ceremony were Mr. and Mrs. John C. Sweet, uncle and aunt of the bride, with their daughters, the Misses Polly and Helen Jane, and Mrs. Sweet's mother, Mrs. Charles D. Lougee; Mrs. Arthur A. Law, and Mrs.. Richard Read. Other out-of-town guests included Mr. and Mrs. Ray Chase, cousins of the bridegroom, and Mr. and Mrs. A. T. Baker of St. Paul; Mr. Albert Pratt, Jr., of Anoka; Mrs. F. A. Baker, Oakland, Calif.; Mrs. William J. Parker, Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Sweet of Swampscott, Mass., and their son, John; Mrs. Cyril Sweet, Minot, N. D., and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Petermann, Mr. Albert Petermann, Jr., Miss Mary Locke Petermann, Mr. and Mrs. William Thielmann, and William Thielmann, Jr., of Calumet, Mich.

Mrs. Giddings, who was graduated from Smith college, Northampton, Mass., attended the University of Minnesota during her junior year and is a member of Alpha Phi sorority. Mr. Giddings is a graduate of Shattuck academy, Faribault, and of the University of Minnesota. He is a member of Chi Psi fraternity. During the past year he was an instructor in the English department of Shattuck Military academy.
