Minneapolis, July 18.—The funeral of Gordon Grimes, broker, who was drowned in Lake Calhoun, will be held tomorrow. The body was found Sunday after being in the water four days.
Minneapolis Morning Tribune, July 18, 19215326
Gordon Grimes, Minneapolis broker, missing from his home at 4024 Upton avenue south since last Wednesday night, was drowned in Lake Calhoun. His body was recovered by "Fisherman" John Jeremy of Stillwater in deep water 200 feet from the lake bathing beach at 4 p. m. yesterday.
The discovery brought to an end a four days' search of all territory surrounding the lake, led by Miss Betty Grimes, the dead man's sister, who would not believe that her brother was drowned, but persisted in her belief that he had wandered off in a dazed condition due to heat prostration.
The lake had been dragged almost continuously since Grimes' disappearance, and when the first two days yielded no results, "Fisherman" John, an Indian, was called to carry on the search. The Indian has had remarkable results in finding the bodies of drowned men. He kept steadily at work in the lake after all other searchers had given up the task.
After working all day yesterday, he finally located the body about 40 feet below the surface, and brought it up while a crowd of 200 people watched his efforts from the shore. The body had been perfectly preserved in the cold depths.
Grimes left his home about 9:30 o'clock Wednesday night, telling his wife that he was going to swim to the middle of Lake Calhoun and back, to escape from the heat. He had suffered a relapse from the heat on the previous Sunday. Although his bathrobe was found on the lake shore early the next morning, his family and friends were certain that Grimes was such an excellent swimmer that he would be very unlikely to drown.
The search in surrounding territory began in earnest Thursday night, when a resident of St. Louis park reported that he had seen a man clad only in a bathing suit wandering aimlessly along a road leading from Lake Calhoun.
Parties of friends in automobiles began to scour the entire territory adjacent to the lake. Bloodhounds were brought from Waterloo, Ia., to aid in the search, but the dogs did not take up any scent beyond the lake. Still unsatisfied, Miss Betty Grimes got an airplane, and, piloted by Ray Miller, flew at a low altitude over surrounding country for more than an hour.
On Saturday, 40 members of the Minneapolis Athletic club, headed by Frank Beach, superintendent of park police, joined in the search. The clubmen organized into squads and systematically covered several square miles near the lake.
Adjutant General W. F. Rhinow yesterday detailed 52 men from the National Guard camp at Fort Snelling to aid the se[a]rchers, and the soldiers thrashed every part of the adjacent territory, beginning at 9 a. m. At noon, dinner was served to the searchers by Mrs. George S. Grimes, 4418 Beard avenue south, mother of the drowned man. Yesterday afternoon, a short time before the body found, John Alden Grimes, Gordon Grimes' only brother, arrived from Washington, D. C., to help hunt for his brother.
Gordon Grimes was born in Minneapolis on August 8, 1888. He attended grade schools here, and was graduated from Central high school. He then entered the University of Minnesota, and completed the academic course in 1909 and the law course two years later. He was captain of the University baseball team, a member of the track team, and participated as a substitute in several University football games. He was a member of the University Y.M.C.A. and was a debater. He was accounted one of the best swimmers in this part of the country, ranking close to his sister Betty, former American high diving champion.
After leaving school, he took up law practice, but later became secretary and general manager of the Fruen Cereal company. Last spring he opened a brokerage office in the Flour Exchange building.
He was a member of the Minneapolis Athletic club, of the Elks' lodge, and the Hennepin County Bar association.
Mr. Grimes is survived by his wife and two children, Betty, 6 years old, and Alden Reynolds, 3, by his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. George S. Grimes, by one brother, John Alden, and three sisters, Betty, Marian and Virginia.
