Funeral services for David Hinckley were held Saturday in Salt Lake City. Mr. Hinckley was a brother of Mrs. Eldon (Harriet) Eliason of Delta and Mrs. Lincoln R. (Cleo) Eliason of Deseret.
He died Tuesday in Flint, Mich. of cancer.
Mr. Hinckley was born Feb. 4, 1928 in Salt Lake City, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Parnell Hinckley. He married Dorene Savage in the Salt Lake Temple June 22, 1953.
He was an Eagle Scout, Master M-Man; served an LDS mission in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland from 1948 to 1950; served in the U. S. Army between 1954 and 1965. Received a degree of B.S. in geology in 1952 from the University of Utah; MA degree in 1957. He attended the Pennsylvania State University for PhD in mineralogy and petrology in 1957-60. He was employed at the research division of A. C. Spark Plug Co. in Flint from 1960 until time of death. He served as Bishop in the Flint Ward for the past three years.
Surviving are his widow, six children; brother, King, Concord, Calif.; sisters, the two Mrs. Eliason's, Mrs. Bernard N. (Josephine) Millner, Trenton, N.J. and Mrs. Fred C. (Marjorie) Ebert, Freeport, Ill.
Dorene Savage Hinckley Ewing passed away February 23, 2010, in Las Cruces, NM from pneumonia. Dorene was born March 24, 1933, in Montpelier, ID to Norma Lewis and Joseph Smith Savage. She spent much of her youth in Yeadon, PA and Green River, WY. When her family moved to Salt Lake City Dorene attended East High School, graduating in 1951. Dorene attended The University of Utah where she was a member of Lambda Delta Sigma. There she met David Narwyn Hinckley. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on June 22, 1953. They had six children: Alan, Kathleen, Carolyn, Josephine, David, and Ira. Their early married years were spent in State College, PA and Flint, MI. After her husband David passed away in 1965, Dorene moved her six children back to Salt Lake City. She enjoyed being a mother and doing further studies at the U of U. On January 25, 1968, she married Gordon J Ewing (widower of Carol Blanchard) and moved to Las Cruces, NM. Dorene then became mother to his four children: Steven, Rebecca, Elizabeth, and Willard. Dorene and Gordon had two more children, Robert and Victoria, numbering 12 children in the combined family.
Dorene loved learning. She attended New Mexico State University, taking one class at a time as she worked toward her degree in English, graduating in 1993. She loved music (a waltz could make her happy!), flowers, and swimming. Dorene was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She loved her family and gave unselfishly of her time and talents to weld a family together, and to teach, guide, and encourage as she made home fun and interesting. She leaves behind a legacy of family, learning, and service.
Dorene is survived by her husband, Gordon J Ewing, and all twelve of her children. Alan (Magdalena) Hinckley; Steven (Suzanne) Ewing; Kathleen Hinckley; Rebecca (James) Sims; Carolyn (Dale) Schramm; Josephine (Rodney) Fudge; David (Carlyn) Hinckley; Elizabeth (Deren) Hansen; Willard, (Leslie) Ewing, Ira Hinckley; Robert Ewing, and Victoria (Jared) Gaume. She has 31 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her aunt Catherine Stout, and her brother-in-law-John Querry.
A viewing will be held Monday, March 1, 2010, from 10-11 a.m. at Walker Sanderson Funeral Home, 646 E. 800 No. Orem, UT. (A funeral was held February 26, 2010, in Las Cruces, NM.) Burial will take place in the Elysian Gardens Cemetery in Salt Lake City, UT.4073
