Harriet Hinckley Eliason of Delta announced her candidacy for a four-year term on the Utah State Board of Education in District 7. Two state board members are apportioned to this district which comprises 16 school districts from Central Utah to the southwest corner of the state.
Mrs. Eliason said one of her major goals as a board member would be to coordinate the state's educational program with the economic structure in regard to current and future job opportunities.
"Students also need training in the evaluation of social problems and the ability to adjust to change," she said.
Mrs. Eliason holds a master's degree from the University of Utah and has had training and experience in social work. She has a son attending Delta Junior High and a daughter at Delta High and two daughters at college, in addition to two daughters who have graduated. She has had experience as PTA president of Delta Junior High and High School, substitute teaching, Millard Day Care Center volunteer work and PTA exceptional child chairman.
Mrs. Eliason is the wife of Eldon A. Eliason, Millard County attorney. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Parnell Hinckley of Salt Lake City.
"I have enjoyed meeting many fine people of our state through my recently completed term as Utah State Cow Belle president (auxiliary to the Utah Cattlemen's Association)," said Mrs. Eliason, "and I am aware of the challenge to develop vocational and educational opportunites in our district."
Mrs. Eliason has served as board member of the Utah Easter Seal Society, Delta Third Ward Relief Society president, Deseret Stake cultural leader, Lady Lions president, and is an active writer.

DELTA—Eldon Alonzo Eliason, age 82, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home July 16, 1997.
Born June 3, 1915 at Fillmore, Utah to Ephraim Jacob and Lois Hattie Robison Eliason. Married Harriet Hinckley March 11, 1946 in the Salt Lake Temple.
A lifelong member of the LDS Church, he served an honorable mission to the Eastern States. He also served for many years on the stake high council and as a counselor in the Delta Stake Presidency. He graduated from the University of Utah School of Law in 1943 and developed a successful and rewarding law practice, never wanting to fully retire. He served 24 years as Millard County Attorney, benefiting the people of Central and Southern Utah, and was respected and loved because of the individual care and treatment he gave his clients, without concern over ability to pay. He was well-known and respected in every courtroom throughout the State.
Constantly involved in the community, he was a member of the Lions Club, Jay Cees, and was a founder of the annual "Days of the Old West Celebration" in Millard County.
He was a successful farmer and cattle rancher, and was rightfully proud of his farming operation. He also loved fishing and sporting activities. His pride and joy were his family.

Harriet Hinckley Eliason, age 82, died peacefully December 28, 2002 following a year-long battle with cancer.
She was born October 1, 1920 in Salt Lake City, the eldest daughter of Ira Parnell and Cleo Cranney Hinckley. She received her BA and MA degrees from the University of Utah, where she met her beloved husband Eldon Alonzo Eliason. They were married March 11, 1946 by Church President George Albert Smith in the Salt Lake Temple. On July 16, 1997 after a 51 year marriage, Eldon preceded her in death. Together they raised six children, five of whom survive her: Jean Lyman (John), Los Alamos, New Mexico; Gayle Reiber (Steve), Seattle, Washington; Elaine Englehardt (Kirk), Provo, Utah; Gwen Church (Gary), North Salt Lake, Utah, and Lonnie Eliason (Karlene), Sandy, Utah. Preceding her in death was daughter Karen Dalley. She is also survived by her son-in-law Greg Dalley, 14 grandchildren and 10 great- grandchildren.
She leaves behind an incredible legacy of community and church service. She served in capacities including Primary president, Relief Society president, PTA president, President of the Utah Cattlemen's Women Auxiliary Association and State President of the General Federated Women's Clubs. She was actively involved in Lyric Lore clubs. An excellent writer, she authored children's stories, and wrote numerous articles for the Salt Lake Tribune and Millard County Chronicle. She held advance certification for education of children with disabilities, whom she began teaching through the Millard County School District as a second career after her family was raised.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 2, 2003 at the Delta Fourth Ward Chapel, 197 South 300 West, Delta, Utah, at 11:00 a.m. Friends may call at the Nickle Mortuary on Wednesday evening, January 1, 2002 from 6:30-8 p.m. and on Thurs. at the chapel 9:30-10:40 a.m.
The family thanks all of Harriet's health care providers, friends, neighbors and ward members, as well as her "Deseret Family" for their loving care and kindness.
