Henry D. Karns

Henry D. Karns, 88, Junction City, died Tuesday, Sept. 8, at the Geary Community Hospital.

He was born Jan. 4, 1899, near Ada in Ottawa County and spent his early life in the Ada community.

Mr. Karns attended Kansas State Agricultural College where he earned bachelor's and master's degrees.

He began his teaching career at Ada and later coached at Osborne where he became principal in 1926. He later was principal in the Concordia schools for 10 years before moving to Junction City in 1941 where he became principal of the Junction City Junior-Senior High School.

Mr. Karns was elected to the Kansas Teachers Hall of Fame at Dodge City and served on the board of the Kansas State High School Activities Association in Topeka. He founded the Kay-Kayettes in 1946.

On Dec. 17, 1985, the newly refurbished auditorium at the Junction City High School was named the H.D. Karns Auditorium in honor of his service to Geary County schools and students.

He was married to Helen Lank July 27, 1926, at Solomon. She survives.

Other survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Carol Hall, Kansas City, Mo.; a son, Bruce Karns, Junction City; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church in Junction City. Burial will be in Prairie Mound Cemetery at Solomon. Mr. Karns will lie in state until noon Friday at the Johnson Funeral Chapel, Junction City, where relatives and friends will meet from 7 to 9 this evening. The casket will be closed at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Junction City.

Helen Lank Karns

JUNCTION CITY — Helen Lank Karns, 90, Junction City, died Wednesday, July 21, 1993, at the Good Samaritan Center, Junction City.

Mrs. Karns was born Helen Lank on Dec. 19, 1902, at Solomon and was a resident of Junction City since 1941, moving from Concordia. She taught school in rural Ottawa and Saline counties, Solomon and Junction City. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the church choir, the Retired Teachers Association, the Humboldt Extension Homemakers Unit and the Solomon Order of Eastern Star Fraternity Chapter 113.

Her husband, Henry Daniel, died in 1987.

Survivors include a daughter, Carol Hall of Kansas City, Mo.; a son, Bruce of Junction City; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Johnson Funeral Home, Junction City, the Rev. Julia Wharff officiating. Private burial will be in Prairie Mound Cemetery, Solomon.

Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church.

Visitation will be from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, 203 N. Washington, Junction City, 66441.
