Thomas E. McCoy died Nov. 29 from emphysema at Franciscan Hospital. The Westwood resident was 76.
In 1943, Mr. McCoy entered the Army at age 19. A year later, he was a sergeant and seriously wounded near Cherbourgh, France, serving with the 324th Infantry.
After he was discharged in November 1944, Mr. McCoy was a mail carrier for 10 years. Then, he began working at the Terrace Hilton Hotel (now the Crowne Plaza), downtown, as a stationary engineer for 20 years.
From there, he went to St. George Hospital, now Franciscan Hospital Western Hills, as director of plant maintenance until 1986, when he retired.
After his retirement, Mr. McCoy enjoyed making crafts for his grandchildren and was devoted to his family, according to his son, Dick McCoy of Delhi Township. "As a father, he was somebody who taught us how to be lovable," his son said. "He was committed to family. He taught us how to love and how important family was. I tried to pass these values on to my kids."
Mr. McCoy was born and raised in Riverside. He attended Elder High but quit to work at B&O Railroad before enlisting in the Army.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Seton Council and the Buddy Post American Legion Drum and Bugle Corps.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Gloria two daughters, Gail Schaaf of Centerville, Ohio, and Judy Scarlato of Westwood; three other sons, Keith of Delhi Township, Thomas of Hillsboro, Ohio, and Gary of Bridgetown 19 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Services have been held. Burial was at New St. Joseph Cemetery in Price Hill.
