Walter R. Mitchell, former Salina resident who rose from radio repairman to nuclear testing instrument consultant, will be guest speaker at the Nuclear and Mechanical Engineering Seminar at Kansas State University, Manhattan, Thursday.
Mitchell, now president of the National Geophysical Company Inc., Dallas, Tex., was born and raised in Salina. He graduated from Salina High in 1929. His father, M. L. Mitchell, assistant postmaster in Salina for 34 years, died in 1929 while serving on the city commission. Walter Mitchell's sister, Helen, 415 S. 8th, is a teacher at Roosevelt Junior High.
After getting an electrical engineering degree at Kansas State, Walter returned to Salina, set up a radio service shop, and taught elementary radio courses in the Salina High night school and at Kansas Wesleyan.
In 1957 he joined the National Geophysical Company after a period as head of the radio department, Cowie Electric Company, Wichita. The National Geophysical Company is engaged in the design, development and manufacture of electronic equipment.
Mitchell has done research on the problem of detecting sub-surface nuclear explosions. He has delivered scientific papers before technical societies on three continents.
At present his company is supplying special instrumentation at the federal government's Nevada atomic test sites.
