Herbert H. Mitchell

Herbert Houston Mitchell of Kensington, a former San Francisco printing and advertising executive, died Sunday at a care facility in The City. He was 82.

Mr. Mitchell, a prominent Christian Scientist, was a partner and vice-president of Kennedy-Ten Bosch Co., a printing firm in San Francisco, for 40 years before his retirement in 1966.

He was a native of Salina, Kan., where his father, Miles Lecki Mitchell, was a city commissioner and acting postmaster. His grandfather, Luke Parson, was that city's first sheriff.

After high school he came to California and attended Cal Tech and UCLA before graduating from Stanford with honors in 1924.

In recent years, Mr. Mitchell was devoted to reorganizing the former Christian Science Benevolent Association in San Francisco into the Arden Wood Benevolent Association. He also was active in Christian Scientist nursing homes in Castro Valley, St. Helena and Berkeley.

He was a member of the First Church of Christ Scientist in Boston and of Second Christ Scientist in Berkeley, where he also served as director and first reader.

Active in civic and professional affairs, Mr. Mitchell was a member of the San Francisco Jaycees, Breakfast Club, Toastmasters, Advertising Club of San Francisco, Commercial Club, Olympic Club and Navy League.

He was married for 44 years to the Former Edith Alfred Vokes, of Oshawa, Ontario. After her death in 1975, he married Irma Randall Welpton, of Berkeley.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, David V. Mitchell, publisher of the Point Reyes Light; a brother, Walter R. Mitchell, of Dallas; a sister, Mary McAllister, of Grand Pass, Ore.; three stepdaughters, Jean Shephard, of Albany, Dr. Anne Fisher-Wirth, of Charlottesville, Va., and Jennifer Welpton McKenzie, of Kirkwood, Mo.; and six grandchildren.

Private memorial services for family only will be held Saturday. After cremation, ashes will be scattered at sea by Sunset View Cemetery, El Cerrito.
