Miss Helen Martin Will Marry George Newman on June 28

Cedar Falls—The engagement and approaching marriage of Miss Helen Martin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. LeClaire Martin, and George Francis Newman, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Newman, was announced Saturday by the parents of the bride-elect.

The ceremony will take place Monday, June 28, at St. Luke's Episcopal church, Cedar Falls. Miss Martin will be attended by her sister, Esther Martin, a teacher in the Waverly schools. The bride will wear the wedding dress worn by her mother on her wedding day.

Cedar Falls Girl Quits Japan for U.S.

Cedar Falls, Aug. 7.—Miss Helen Martin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. LeClair Martin, of this city, who spent the last several months in Japan, at the home of an uncle, Victor Martin, writes relatives here she has started upon her return trip to the United States.

En route she will stop in the Philippines to spend several weeks at the home of Major and Mrs. W. A. Graham, former residents of Cedar Falls, who have been stationed in the Phillippines the last few years.

The Grahams have been ordered to return to the United States and will accompany Miss Martin on the return trip. It is believed they will arrive some time in October.

George F. Newman

CEDAR FALLS — Memorial services for George F. Newman, 80, of 1420 Cottage Row, will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Luke's Episcopal Church. The body was cremated.

He died Thursday in Tempe, Ariz.

He was born Jan. 19, 1908, in Cedar Falls, son of James B. and Winifred Simpson Newman. He married Helen H. Martin on June 28, 1937.

He was a 1930 graduate of the University of Northern Iowa and a 1933 graduate of Harvard Law School. He began practicing law with his father after his graduation.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945.

He was elected to the board of directors of Viking Pump Co. and named treasurer and general counsel in 1946. He was a senior partner of the law firm Newman, Redfern & McKinley until 1960 when he became associated with Viking Pump Co. He was elected executive vice president and treasurer of Viking Pump Co. in 1962 and served as president from November 1965 until his retirement in 1971.

He was a former member of the Cedar Falls Library Board, president of the Chamber of Commerce, director of First National Bank and Midway Bank and Trust Co., and a director of the National Association of Manufacturers and the Iowa Manufacturers Association.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, James M. Newman of Santa Cruz, Calif., and Peter S. Newman of Eugene, Ore; and three grandchildren; he was preceded in death by a brother, James; and a sister, Alice Newman.

Memorials may be made to the Cedar Falls Public Library.

CEDAR FALLS — Helen H. Newman, 91, of Cedar Falls, died Feb. 16, in Tempe, Ariz., of natural causes.

She was born Jan. 22, 1908, in Cedar Falls, daughter of LeClair and Mary Kinne Martin. She married George F. Newman on June 28, 1937, in Cedar Falls. He died Dec. 29, 1988.

Mrs. Newman attended Iowa State Teachers College for three years, and later graduated from Gates Business College, Waterloo. She was a secretary in Chicago for two years and also worked in the business office at Iowa State Teachers College for several years.

Survived by: two sons, James M. of Santa Cruz, Calif., and Peter S. of Eugene, Ore.; three grandchildren; and a sister, Esther M. Andrews of Pacific Palisades, Calif.

Preceded in death by: a brother, Edward K. Martin; and two sisters, Mary Grace Hetzler and Jeanne Clair Hague.

Memorial services: 11 a.m. Monday at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, with inurnment in Greenwood Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials: may be directed to the St. Luke's Episcopal Church building fund or Iowa College Foundation.
