Pearl Eleanor (Arnold) Purintun Messerer (R.N.) died Jan. 28, 1995, at Friendship Village, Waterloo, Iowa, at the age of 85 years and 28 days. She had been a resident of Friendship Village since June 1980.
Pearl was born Dec. 31, 1909, at Bryant Twp., Hamlin Co., S.D., daughter of Flora Katherine Robish and Edward G. Arnold. Pearl married (1) Paul Martin Purintun on June 21, 1940, at Kellerton Evangelical Church, Hazel, S.D. (in a double-ring ceremony with her brother, the Rev. William Arnold and Ruth Forcht). Paul was born Jan. 1, 1905, in Mount Pleasant Two., Green County, Wis., near Monticello, Wis., son of Charles Gilman Purintun and Katie Sylvester. He died June 11, 1979, age 74, at Cedar Falls, Iowa, and is buried in Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens, Cedar Falls. Pearl was married (2) June 24, 1980, at her home at 1114 Bluff St., Cedar Falls, to Fred Michael Messerer. Fred was born May 13, 1894 at Banks Twp., Fayette Co., near Sumner, Iowa, son of Michael John Messerer and Augusta Sophia Duhrkoph. He died March 8, 1989, age 94, and is buried in Garden of Memories, Waterloo, with his first wife, Minnie Louise Dallenbach, who was born March 16, 1893, at Will Co., Ill., daughter of John W. Dallenbach and Mary Moyer. Fred and Minnie were married June 14, 1914, at Rockwell City, Iowa, and had no children. Minnie died June 12, 1976, at Cedar Falls.
Pearl had a distinguished career as a Registered Nurse. A 1931 graduate of Hazel (S.D.) High School, she received her R.N. degree in 1934 from Methodist Hospital, Mitchell, S.D., and on March 1, 1939, a Graduate Degree in Obstetrics from Michael Reese Hospital, Chicago, Ill. Upon receiving her R.N. she was "on staff" as Floor Supervisor at Methodist Hospital, Mitchell (1935-36). The height of her career was while there she was asked by a doctor (who'd had a heart attack) to take his Model T Ford car and his "black bag" and a nurse anesthetist and go into the country in a snowstorm to deliver a baby, which she gladly did, signing the birth certificate with her name. From 1936-37 she was Superintendent of the Winner (S.D.) Hospital. During her early career she left her work three times for a month-year at a time to go home and take care of ill family members. Pearl resumed her career as Superintendent of Monroe Evangelical Deaconess Hospital, Monroe, Wis., where she also taught Practical Nursing (1937-39). She "specialed" doctor's wives who were ill in their homes in Chicago and whole families down with diptheria who lived in log cabins in Green County, Wis., meanwhile feeding the threshing crew and the "farm hired hands," churning butter and cheese, etc., doing the laundry and cleaning besides. After her first marriage, Pearl and Paul moved to Forest City, Iowa, where she was an Obstetrical Supervisor at Forest City (Iowa) Hospital (1940-43); from 1945-50 she was Obstetrical Night Supervisor at Hartley (Iowa) Hospital; and finally Obstetrical Supervisor at Spencer (Iowa) Hospital (1956-57), and then co-owner/operator (with her husband) of the Purintun Nursing Home, Everly, Iowa (1957-66). In 1966 she and her husband moved to Cedar Falls, where she was Night Nursing Supervisor at Western Home, Cedar Falls (1966-1975) where she retired from nursing. From 1975-77 she owned her own business as one of the first Mary Kay Beauty consultants in Cedar Falls/Waterloo, Iowa, area. Pearl outsold 200 women in her unit to become the 1976 Unit Queen of Sales. She sewed, quilted (171 quilts for persons all over the USA) and tatted for the public until her stroke in February 1994.
Pearl resided at Friendship Village Retirement Home, Waterloo, at the time of her death. She was a committed active member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Cedar Falls, having served on a number of boards, committees and the Visitation committee. Currently, her membership was with First United Methodist Church, Cedar Falls. She was also a member of the Cedar Falls Nurses' Club. She volunteered preparing meals at the Salvation Army; and as an avid gardener was known at Friendship Village as the "Flower Lady" because she provided fresh flowers for the dining hall tables. Her life was one to total commitment to God through Christ. With a smile and her enormous amount of energy, she spent her life finding was to regularly make small gifts to take to friends and relatives to lift their spirits or bring joy and love to their lives.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her brothers, Eldon, William, Theodore "Ted" and Wesley Arnold; a siter, Violet Arnold (wife of the Rev. Lee Wright, also deceased); brother-in-law David Purintun of Janesville, Wis; three sisters-in-law, Florence Purintun (Mrs. David Purintun), Helen Purintun Babler (Mrs. Elton Babler) of Wauwatosa, Wis., and Ruth Purintun of Madison, Wis.; and a son, Roger Charles Purintun, who was born April 23, 1944, and died April 30, 1944.
Surviving are her two daughters and their husbands, Harveta Ann Purintun (Mrs. John B. Rockwell Jr.) of Champlin, Minn., and Kathryn Jean Purintun (Mrs. Duane "Gus" Andress) of Anchorage, Alaska; two grandchildren, Joanne Kristine Rockwell and Jonathan Jay Rockwell of Champlin, Minn.; sisters-in-law, Mrs. Eldon (Reva) Arnold of Dell Rapids, S.D., Mrs. William (Ruth) Arnold of Ramona, S.D., Mrs. Theodore (Ardyth) Arnold and Mrs. Wesley (Arlys) Arnold, both of Watertown, S.D., and Florence Purintun of Madison, Wis.; 12 nephews and five nieces; numerous stepnieces and nephews as well as many relatives and friends.
