Was a native of Virginia, and came to New Paris, Ohio, in 1821, where he remained two years. During that time he taught school in that vicinity, and came to Richmond in 1823, and for several years served as clerk in Robert Morrison's store. On the resignation of Robert Morrison in 1829, as Postmaster, Mr. Reid was appointed to that office. In connection with that office, he engaged in the mercantile business, which he conducted for a number of years. He was appointed to the Land Office at Fort Wayne. After residing there about sixteen years, as Register of the Land Office and farmer, he again returned to our city, where he resumed the active business life he had always engaged in, in which capacity DEATH has removed him, in the midst of the full enjoyment of all his faculties and vigorous manhood, which he enjoyed in a fuller degree at his time of life (being in the 74th year of his life) than is usually allotted to man. His has been a useful career, and he leaves to all who knew him lasting impressions of a well-spent life. The high esteem in which he was held was evinced by the large attendance of his old friends and early settlers at his funeral. he was an active and devoted member of the Associated Reformed Church. "He sleeps well."
