Fifty Years of Wedded Life

Yesterday was the 50th anniversary of the marriage of James Scott and wife of this city. Mrs. Scott was Miss Anna J. Hopkins, and they were married at Pleasant Green, in Henderson county, the 30th of May, 1836. They have seen Monmouth grow from a village of a few houses to the city of today. The children who have blessed this union are a son in California, Rufus in Kentucky, Robt., Walter and James, the grocers of the north side, and Mary, who resides with her parents. Many old friends remembering the date of the wedding, called yesterday to tender their congratulations and best wishes for the continued life and prosperity of the worthy couple.

James Scott, the venerable head of the Scott Bros. & Co., establishment, attained the eightieth year of his age today. Mr. Scott is one of the pioneers of Western Illinois and occupies an important position in the history of this section. the last half century. He is a man whose physical nature and mental faculties have been preserved to a remarkable degree. The past twenty-five years indicates no marked change in him. If life is spared Mr. and Mrs. Scott will reach their fiftieth wedding anniversary the 30th of May.

James Scott died Tuesday night after an illness of several weeks, aged 85 years. He had been an invalid for a long time, and although his death was expected the announcement brought sadness to the many friends whom he had made in a residence in this and Henderson counties since 1836, removing here from the place of his birth in Rock Bridge county, Virginia. He was married at Pleasant Green, May 30, 1836, to Miss Anna Jane Hopkins. He reared quite a large family, five sons and one daughter surviving him. For many years he was of the firm of Scott Bros. & Co., in this city, and during his lifetime conducted successful businesses here and at Oquawka. He was a member of the Masonic order, joining a lodge near Jackson, Miss., in 1828. The funeral occurred at the late residence, 200 South A street Thursday afternoon.

MORTUARY.

Mrs. Anna Hopkins Scott.

Yesterday afternoon occurred the death of Mrs. Anna Hopkins Scott at her home 323 North Second street after a lingering illness due to old age. Mrs. Scott was a devoted and loving mother, a consistent Christian, a sincere and constant friend. From her life many lessons of upright and wholesome living can be gleaned.

Anna J. Hopins was born December 8, 1813 in Rockingham county, Virginia, and moved with her parents to Christian county, Kentucky, in 1819. With her mother and brother she came to Illinois and settled near Pleasant Green in 1835. She was married May 30, 1836 to James Scott. To them were born 9 children, 5 of whom are living, namely, Thomas W. of San Francisco, California, Robert F., Rufus H., Walter B., and James A., of Monmouth. In 1854 they moved to Oquawka and from there came to Monmouth in 1875, since which time they have made this city their home. Mr. Scott died February 25, 1891. Mrs. Scott is survived by one brother, Rufus C. Hopkins of San Francisco, who is 87 years old.

The funeral services will take place tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the family residence 323 North Second street, and will be conducted by Dr. King, pastor of the Presbyterian church.
