Children of MARIETTA USHER and RUFUS HOPKINS SCOTT:
Monmouth Review Atlas, December 25, 19246439
Rufus H. Scott, for nearly fifty years one of the leading business men of the community, died last night at midnight at Monmouth hospital where he went over two weeks ago for treatment. An operation relieved his intense suffering, but his previously weakened condition precluded his rallying to the extent that had been hoped for and the end came quietly and peacefully while the members of his immediate family were at his bedside.
Mr. Scott's death marks the passing of one of the best known, and for many years one of the most active of Monmouth's citizens. His interests were numerous and brought him into contact with many people; the length of his life gave him a fund of reminiscences which furnished his ever active mind with ample food for thought, and to talk to him was an interesting experience.
With his three brothers, Robert, James and Walter, he entered the grocery business here in 1875, the firm name being Scott Bros. & Co. Although he had not been active in the business for the past few years he maintained his interest therein, and his business acumen was keen to the end. This connection brought him in contact with a host of people in the territory tributary to Monmouth, and once an acquaintance was formed it was maintained.
He was an ardent Mason and in the various circles connected with that order he found many opportunities to express his genial personality. His good humor was always in evidence and he was universally popular with his associates. He joined the fraternity in Oquawka many years ago, later transferring his membership to Monmouth Lodge No. 37. He was also affiliated with Warren Chapter No. 30, R. A. M., was a Knight Templar, and a member of the Mystic Shrine.
Mr. Scott was the son of James and Anna J. (Hopkins) Scott, and was born at Pleasant Green, Henderson County, June 28, 1942. The family moved to Oquawka in 1854. In 1861 he enlisted in the union Army and served to the end of the War, being a prisoner in Libby Prison at the time Richmond was evacuated.
At the close of the war he returned to Oquawka and was engaged in railroad work until shortly before the grocery firm bearing the Scott name was organized here in 1875. He was for a number of years a member of the old Company H, Illinois National Guard, and a lieutenant in the organization.
November 1, 1876, Mr. Scott was united in marriage in Kentucky to Miss Marietta Usher, who survives him. He is also survived by an only son, Harold U. Scott, assistant cashier of the Monmouth Trust & Savings bank, and by two brothers, James A. and Walter B. Scott.
His church affiliation was with the congregation of the First Presbyterian.
Private funeral services will be held at the home, 514 East Detroit avenue, tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, in charge of John Lugg. The local Masonic Lodge will conduct the ritual of the order at the grave in Monmouth cemetery.
