Scott Now 53 Years In Customs Service

Thomas W. Scott, 2584 Filbert street, a bond clerk at the Customhouse, yesterday rounded out fifty-three years in the local customs service. In 1866 he enterd the service as a weigher's clerk. Scott is now 82 years old. He returned to work Friday after an attack of influenza, saying that since the influenza germs had been eliminated from his system he felt better than he had for years and he looked forward to many years of activity.

Customs Clerk and War Veteran Dies

Thomas W. Scott, customs clerk and Civil War veteran, died Friday night at the residence of his son-in-law, J. J. E. Webster, 2584 Filbert street. Scott was born in Illinois in 1837, and entered the local customs servcie January 1, 1866. He resigned in 1874 to become cashier in the post ffice, and returned to the customs service in 1882. He was credited with being a remarkably well preserved man for his years, and the complication of heart and throat trouble, which resulted in his death, developed but recently. The funeral will take place tomorrow.
