Former Citizen Is Dead

W. L. Wallick Passed Away Friday Morn.

Heart Failure Cause of Death—Mrs. Wallick Was Preparing to Join Him in Catskills Next Week

A message announcing the sudden death of W. L. Wallick, was received here, Friday morning, by Mrs. Wallick who has been the guest of relatives here. The message stated death was sudden and had occurred at Cairo in the Catskills, at one o'clock Friday morning.

The news of her husband's death was a severe shock to Mrs. Wallick. She had partially packed her trunks, preparatory to joining Mr. Wallick the first of the week. When seen by a Times man, she could assign no other cause, than heart failure to his death, stating that he had been in poor health for several years.

The body will probably arrive in this city tonight or not later than Saturday. It will be taken to the Shriver home, East High street, whence the funeral will be held. Messrs. Louis and London Wallick of New York will accompany the body to this city.

Until the family left this city abut six years ago, Mr. Wallick was one of the best known men in the county. For twenty years he had been engaged in the hotel business here. Upon arriving, he took charge of the old Gilsey house and later purchased the Sherman house, which was widely known over the state. He operated this hotel until it was purchased by J. E. Reeves remodeled and is now known as the Reeves hotel.

Upon leaving here, Mr. and Mrs. Wallick went to Shamokin, Pa., where they had charge of the largest hotel in the city for two years. Mr. Wallick's health failing he retired from active business and the family moved to New York. This summer he assumed the management of the Cairo hotel believing the diversion would be beneficial.

Mr. Wallick was born in Shanesville September 10, 1848. The son of farmer folks he was brought up on the farm and received his education in the township schools. Showing marked musical talent, he went to Mansfield, when seventeen years old, to complete his musical training. He began life as an instructor in vocal and instrumental music, locating in Shanesville; he also dealt in musical instruments. At this time Mr. Wallick was known as one of the best vocalists in eastern Ohio and his friends here recall with delight the many happy hours whiled away in the presence of his pleasing personality and remarkable voice.

Mr. Wallick's life was worth while. He was a shrewd business man and success crowned his efforts. The family that was reared proved a credit to him, three of the sons being among the leading and foremost hotel men in the country. Mr. Wallick was a well met man, and among the knights of the grip his death will be received with great sorrow.

Besides a wife, five sons survive Mr. Wallick. They are Louis and London of the Hotel Cadillac, New York and Secor hotel, Toledo; Adrian of the Secor; William A. connected with a large hotel realty company in Chicago; Jacob O. proprietor of one of the large Massillon hotels.
