The Ohio Democrat, July 13, 18663180
On last Friday evening, during a thunder storm, the house of Adam Shriver, of this place, was struck by lightning. A portion of the top of a chimney was knocked off, one of the bricks passing over an adjoining building and knocking a hole in the weatherboarding of a house on the next lot; there seemed to be two currents, one running down the chimney, while the other, and heaviest, struck the roof a few feet from the chimney, splintering shingles into fragments and throwing them in all directions; passing along the beams it reached a large oval window, and shattered the glass and sash into atoms. One of the families residing in the building were at the supper table, almost under the portion of the roof struck by the lightning, but, strange to say, no one was injured. The shock was very severe, and sensibly felt by persons in the houses adjoining.
The house caught fire from the fluid but the flames were soon extinguished. Although the rain poured down in torrents, yet the Fire Companies were promptly on the ground, within a few minutes after the alarm was given.—Chronicle
