LITTLE VALLEY — Charles James Smith of 429 W. Ann S., Punta Gorda, Fla., a former Little Valley resident, died Tuesday (May 19, 1970) at St. Joseph's Hospital at Fort Charlotte, Fla., after a five month illness.
Born in Bradford, Pa., July 23, 1924, he was a son of Charles S. and Jennie Winquist Smith. On June 2, 1947, in Cuba, he was married to the former Helen Soposky, who survives.
In addition to his widow, Mr. Smith is survived by a son, Charles James Smith Jr. at home.
Mr. Smith was a graduate of Little Valley Central School and had been employed by his mother at the Hotel Whitney in Little Valley, and the Cattaraugus County Highway Dept. prior to moving to Florida 14 years ago.
In Florida he had been employed by Sterns-Rogers Co. as a warehouse man, and previous to his death had been employed as purchasing agent for the School Board of Public Instruction in Punta Gorda.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Church of Punta Gorda; and Little Valley Post 531, American Legion.
Friends will be received at the VanRensselaer Funeral Home, Little Valley, Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A prayer service will be held at the funeral home Saturday (May 23, 1970) at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Requiem Mass at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Little Valley. The Rev. Francis T. Hogan, pastor, will be celebrant. Burial will be in Little Valley Rural Cemetery.
The Rosary will be recited at 8:30 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.
