Charles Smith, 18 years old, who secretly fled from this place about nine months ago, voluntarily returned last Thursday. On Friday he was married to Miss Nettie Sprague of this place at Randolph. Sheriff Hazard had been endeavoring to catch young Smith for nine months, but without avail.

C. J. Smith Dies; Former Supervisor In Cattaraugus

Little Valley — Charles J. Smith, 73, Little Valley, a former Town supervisor and businessman of many interests, died Sunday morning following a long illness. He was born in Onoville, Aug. 28, 1879, and moved to Little Valley about the turn of the century.

Mr. Smith first operated a livery stable, progressing with the times in having the first Ford sales agency at Little Valley. He operated a sawmill and his farm as well as leasing several other farms.

He was a Democratic member of the Board of Supervisors for 14 years and was a member of the finance and fair committees. He was greatly interested in fairs and served as chairman of the racing committee at the county fair for several years.

Prior to his last illness he was director of the Cattaraugus County Bank and owned the Whitney Hotel in which he was associated with his son, Charles S. Smith.

Besides the son, survivors are three daughters, Mrs. Ella Storum, Orlando, Fla., Mrs. Almira Furhmann and Mrs. Josephine Sommerville, both of West Seneca; three sisters, Mrs. Kate Little, Salamanca, Mrs. Rose Smith, this village and Mrs. Theresa Burroughs, Randolph, and three brothers, William, Randolph; Fred, Falconer, and Leo, Randolph.

He was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church. A Rosary service will be held Tuesday evening. FUneral services will be held from the Rensselaer Funeral Home at 9 A.M. Wednesday and from the church at 9:30 A.M. with Rev. Ralph Hughes officiating. The body is at the funeral home. Burial will be at the family plot in Randolph Cemetery.
