Edwin J. Smith

Ocean Park resident Edwin J. Smith, 80, died March 15, 1997, in a Long Beach care center.

He was born May 26, 1916, in Jerome, Idaho, to Edwin and Minnie (Sayer) Smith. His mother was a schoolteacher who taught wherever there was a need, so the family lived in various cities around the Pacific Northwest, including Skamokawa and Toutle.

In 1941, Mr. Smith began working for Union Pacific Railroad in Portland as a machinist, retiring in 1976. He was married to Clarice Tobie on May 13, 1945, and they made their home in Portland until moving to Ocean Park in 1977.

Mr. Smith was a handyman who could fix anything. He was skilled in home repairs and, given enough time, could figure out how anything worked. As a machinist for Union Pacific, he invented a device called a "cherry picker" that was used to get nuts and bolts in and out of awkward places. When he and his wife moved to Ocean Park, he disassembled their house in Portland and moved it piece by piece to Ocean Park, where he rebuilt it himself. He enjoyed making models of ships, trains of various scales, and other types of models.

The Smiths loved to travel, visiting the Middle East, the Holy Land, Hawaii, Alaska, Europe and the Caribbean. Mr. Smith was a member of the National Model Railroading Association, the American Association of Retired Persons, and since 1977, the Ocean Park Community Church.

Survivors include his wife, Clarice, at home; two sons, Harvey Smith of Portland and Warren Smith of Salem; a daughter, Maxine Smith of Portland, three grandsons; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The memorial service was held at 11 a.m. today at Ocean Park Community Church. Private interment will be at Skyline Memorial Gardens in Portland. Contributions may be made to the Ocean Park Community Church Roofing Fund.
