Knighstown, Ind., September 21.—Local society circles were surprised yesterday to learn of the marriage of Elmer E. Smith and Miss Lizzie Bell, which took place at 11 o'clock a. m., the Rev. William Carson, of the Presbyterian church, officiating. Only a few immediate friends and members of the bride's family were present. Mr. Smith's home is in Indianapolis. He is the proprietor of a large flouring mill and grain elevator here. Miss Bell is a daughter of W. N. Bell, a prominent hardware merchant here.

Death Of Elmer E. Smith

Elmer Smith, aged 53 years, assistant cashier at the Citizens National Bank, this city, died at St. Vincent hospital, Indianapolis, as the result of an operation for throat trouble he underwent at the hospital a week before. He was one of the best known men in Knightstown. For many years Mr. Smith was the Master of Finance of Knights of Pythias Lodge, No. 226, and was one of the active members of that lodge. He was also identified with the local Masonic order. He passed away at 11:45 o'clock, Saturday night, death resulting from pneumonia, which followed an operation for a malignant cancerous growth of the vocal chords.

Besides his wife he is survived by one son, Reginald Smith. He also leaves one brother, Harry Smith, of Indianapolis, and one sister, Mrs. R. E. Harmeyer, of Chicago.

The funeral was held from his late home, East Main street, Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Rowland Badger, pastor of the Presbyterian Church. Burial was at Glencove cemetery, in charge of C. F. Baxter, undertaker.

Mrs. Elizabeth Smith Dies; Pioneer Resident Of Knightstown

Funeral services for Elizabeth Bell Smith, 82, widow of Elmer Smith, were conducted Monday afternoon from the Schweizer Funeral home with the Rev. Arthur E. Powell officiating. Burial was in Glen Cove cemetery.

Mrs. Smith, one of the oldest surviving members of a pioneer Knightstown family, died Saturday afternoon at her home at 336 E. Main street. She had been ill for 18 months and died in the home in which she was born.

Survivors include a son, Reginald, at home, and a sister, Mrs. Clara Thornton, who made her home with Mrs. Smith.

Mrs. Smith was born Sept. 2, 1868, the daughter of William and Adelaide Noble Bell, and her grandfather, Harvey Bell, was one of the founders of the Bethel Presbyterian church in Knightstown. Her grandfather had established the Bell Hardware company, which was located in Bell's Hall (now occupied by Rody's Department store and Woods Pharmacy).

She married Elmer Smith Sept. 20, 1899, and her husband preceded her in death in 1926. Mr. Smith had been a miller and owned a flour mill on South Washington street.

She attended grade school and high school at Knightstown and then attended Mrs. Blaker's school in Indianapolis, from which she was graduated. She took kindergarten teacher training.

Mrs. Smith was a member of the Bethel Presbyterian church and was a 50-year member of the Knightstown chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, in which organization she was secretary for 20 years. She also was a member of the Avon club.

Pall bearers were Frank Edwards, Allan Greer, Raymond Bales, Robert Parker, Willard Avery, and Jack Shields.

Out-of-town visitors at the funeral home were Mr. and Mrs. Milton Chappelle, Muncie, Mr. and Mrs. Allen Greer, Mr. and Mrs. John Giver, Mr. and Mrs. Roy W. Steele, and Ted Steele, Indianapolis.
