HORSE THROUGH CAR TOP

SIX INJURED IN A RUNAWAY ON SOUTHWEST BOULEVARD

Frightened by Broken Shaft, the Animal Bolts and Attempts to Hurdle a Chevrolet in Its Path.

A runaway horse caused injuries to six persons late yesterday and gave Southwest boulevard a type of excitement seldom witnessed in this age.

The persons injured were Mrs. Lilly Stambaugh, 43 years old, 1122 South Thirty-fifth street, Rosedale section of Kansas City, Kansas; her husband, Pearl L. Stambaugh, 48; their son, Claude E. Stambaugh, 19; J. H. Higgins, 61, 1524 Rosedale drive, Kansas City, Kansas, and a man and his wife, whose identity was not learned.

Higgins was driving his horse, Betsy, to a small wagon, on Southwest boulevard. With him was a man and woman he did not know, whom he had offered transportation toward the city.

At Thirtieth street the shaft of the wagon broke, frightening Betsy, who started off at a gallop. The shaft swinging against her legs increased her speed, and Higgins and his companions were thrown from the wagon. Betsy broke away and raced down the boulevard.

At Twenty-ninth street Claude Stambaugh and his mother sat in a parked Chevrolet couple waiting for Pearl Stambaugh, who was in a store. Betsy attempted to jump over the Chevrolet. Her hoofs went through the top of the car, striking Claude Stambaugh and his mother. Mrs. Stambaugh suffered severe lacerations of the head, face, arms and shoulders, bruises and probable internal injuries. Claude was cut on the left hand.

Pearl Stambaugh ran from the store and tried to quiet the animal. He suffered severe bruises. Higgins, who had suffered a slight injury to his hip, arrived then and took the animal away.

The injured persons were treated at the scene of the accident and went home. Betsy, who was injured slightly, was taken to a veterinarian.
