Children of MINNIE GERTRUDE SANDERS and ALONZO EUGENE COSTON:
Holt County Sentinel, February 6, 19203149
The town was greatly shocked this morning, Thursday, January 29, 1920, when it was learned at an early hour that Gene Coston had shot himself. It was learned that he got up at about 5:30 and went to the basement to build a fire in the furnace. Mrs. Coston got up later and went to the basement to see what had become of him. She found him at the foot of the stairs, sitting in a stooped position with a 22-calibre target rifle between his knees. He had shot himself, but was still alive and breathing heavily. A hurried call was phoned to Dr. C. P. Fryer, who found the bullet had entered the forehead and that there was no possible chance to save his life.
Mr. Coston was about 45 years old, and has been engaged in farming, and only a few days ago bought the old home farm.
He leaves a wife, several children and other relatives. Just what prompted him to do the rash deed will perhaps never be known.
As we go to press it is reported that Mr. Coston is still alive, but no hope is held out for his recover.—Maitland Herald, January 29, 1920.
