DIED AFTER A BRIEF ILLNESS

John L. Thompson, a Well Known Resident of This City, Passes Away.

AGE WAS 74 YEARS

Had Been a Resident of Richmond the Greater Part of His Life — Funeral Saturday.

Another of Richmond's pioneers has passed to the final reckoning.

After an illness of but a few days' duration John L. Thompson, aged 74 years, died at 12:30 o'clock this morning at his residence, 312 North Eleventh street. On last Monday evening, Mr. Thompson was stricken down by what was found to be a ruptured blood vessel in the bowels, just beneath the stomach. His condition grew rapidly worse, until within fifty hours after the first attack, death ensued.

Mr. Thompson was one of the city's most substantial residents. He was also one of its oldest, not only in point of age, but from the fact that the greater portion of his life has been spent either here or within a few miles of the city.

John L. Thompson, son of William H. Thompson and wife, was born in Augusta county, Virginia, June 9, 1829. He was brought here with his parents when a small child, in 1834, and their first residence in this section was with a family named Smith on old Pearl street. Later with the family, he lived with Thomas Young, a few miles south of the city. Here his father taught school and Mr. Thompson grew up working on farms within the vicinity of his home. In early manhood he took up the profession of his father, teaching, and continued it for a short time.

In 1853 he was married to Miss Margaret Fryar, daughter of Samuel Fryar, a pioneer of this section, and to this union was born Mr. Thompson's only surviving child, Albert Thompson. Mrs. Thompson died shortly after the birth of her child and three years later Mr. Thompson took a second partner in Mrs. Olivia Wilson, of Boston, Mass., who died three years ago.

Mr. Thompson took up his permanent residence in Richmond in 1854. He first resided on South Ninth street. Thirty-five years ago he built the home on the corner of Eleventh and North A streets, which he occupied until last fall, when the property was sold for a site for the new United Presbyterian church, when he removed to 312 North Eleventh street, where his death occurred.

Mr. Thompson was employed at Gaar, Scott & Co.'s, and had he lived until May 6, would have celebrated the forty-eighth anniversary of his employment there. He was in the elevator department. He was one of the stockholders of the company and one of the most respected members of the firm.

Three years ago his health began to fail, shortly after the death of his wife. His decline was not so noticeable until about a month ago, but from that time until his fatal sickness he gradually grew weaker. Mr. Thompson was for fifty years a member of the First Presbyterian church, and for many years was an elder of the church. He was also a member of the Masons, Knights Templar and Odd Fellows.

The funeral will take place Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock from the First Presbyterian church, the Rev. I. M. Hughes officiating. Friends may call at the home Friday from 2 to 9 o'clock p.m. The interment will be in Earlham cemetery.
