Ed Wrench, 86, passed away on Monday, August 8, 2011. He was born in Michigan, but lived in La Jolla since 1952. During World War II, he was captured at the "Battle of the Bulge" in Germany in December 1944. On Easter Sunday, 1945, he escaped by jumping from a train while being transferred. After the war, he entered the University of Minnesota and met and married his wife, Marian. They moved to California. Ed graduated in 1949 with a degree in Physics from the University of California at Berkeley and began a career in the aerospace industry. In the 1950s, Ed worked on the Atlas missile program and later worked on developing early satellites. Ed had several patents including the first patent licensed to NASA by a private individual. He is survived by his wife, Marian, his children, Ed, Dwight, Kirke, and Katherine, eleven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a host of relatives that loved him dearly. Marian Weigel Wrench 1924 - 2018 La Jolla Marian Weigel Wrench passed away in her home in La Jolla on Tuesday, Feb. 20 at the self-proclaimed age of "39."Marian grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota, one of six children. She was valedictorian of Washburn High School and graduated with distinction from the University of Minnesota's College of Education. She majored in Mathematics. She belonged to Delta Gamma Sorority and the Honorary Education Sorority.Marian and her husband Edwin moved to La Jolla in 1952 after a tornado tore the roof off their Minneapolis home. They built their dream house on the bluffs of Bird Rock where they watched the surfers and nightly Sea World fireworks. She and Ed liked traveling, sailing and golf.Marian loved to cook and could whip up a meal for hundreds, which she did with joy for various charities in La Jolla, including Social Service League. She was also active in the Delta Gamma Alumni Association, La Jolla Villagers, St. Germaine Children's Charity and was a longtime member of La Jolla Presbyterian Church. Always the life of the party, Marian loved to entertain family and friends. The menu? Anything chocolate; the entertainment? Bridge or Spades. She had a youthful, fun loving spirit and unending enthusiasm for almost any activity other than "sitting-around." She was devoted to her family and loved swimming and boogie-boarding with her grandchildren. Marian was preceded in death by her husband and four siblings. She is survived by her children: Ed, Dwight, Kirke and Katherine (Fait); her sister Patricia Joiner, 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and a host of relatives who loved her dearly. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday March 4 at 2:00 pm at La Jolla Presbyterian Church. She will be interred at Miramar National Cemetery with her husband Ed. Memorial donations may be made to La Jolla Presbyterian Church.
