Weigel, Richard Burch

Loving husband and family patriarch, passed into eternal life on Sunday, February 14, 2016 at ninety-five years of age. He died peacefully at his home in Edina, his last evening enlivened with a joyful and exuberant songfest by his children and grandchildren around his bed.

Richard was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard N. Weigel of Minneapolis. He was graduated from Washburn High School in 1938 and from the University of Minnesota in 1942. As a freshman he met his loving wife of 68 years, Elizabeth Woodruff Weigel, on the steps of Folwell Hall. He served in World War II as a U.S. Navy lieutenant on LST #447 in the South Pacific. He spent his working career as a CPA, business and financial manager, serving in his last professional decades as CFO of the Frederick O. Watson real estate businesses. He lived most of his life in Minneapolis and Edina and also spent many happy winters with Elizabeth in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Our Dad had a long and close connection with Camp Ajawah in Wyoming, Minnesota, as camper, cam director, father and grandfather of many campers, and as a benefactor. Dad also loved to play tennis. He was a regular finalist in club championships at the Interlachen Club, and in friendly games well into his 90s he still executed a wicked crosscourt forehand with aplomb.

Dad was a loving father, a role model and an inspiration to his extended family. We admire his lifetime of accomplishment, sound judgment and impeccable integrity, and we are deeply grateful for his generosity in life and for his grace and dignity in these final months.

Richard is survived by five children, Richard W. (Mary Jean), William H. (Kathleen), Nancy W. Rodman (W. Pringle), Kati W. Ball (William) and Charles L. (Priscilla), by two sisters, Marian Wrench and Patricia Joiner, and by eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, all of whom will miss him deeply. He was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth (1921-2011), and by their daughter Barbara Ann (1945-1947).

We will celebrate our Dad's life at a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Grace Church in Edina at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 20, followed by visitation with the family in the church commons.
