Retired Manager Of DOT Unit Dies

TORRINGTON — Robert M. Williston Sr., 67, of 128 Church St., retired manager of the state Department of Transportation's traffic division, was found dead at home Tuesday. Death was from natural causes, the family physician reported. He was a Torrington native.

Williston joined the DOT in 1940. He was named assistant chief of the traffic division in 1960, division chief two years later and manager in 1972. He retired in 1973.

He instituted such projects as sand-filled crash barriers, which have been credited with saving scores of lives along the state's major highways.

He was a past president of the New England chapter of the Institute of Traffic Engineers, serving as its chairman from 1960 to 1964. He was a former assistant city engineer for the City of Torrington and a member of the city's Flood and Erosion Control Board.

Active in the Torrington Lodge of Elks glee club, he also was a past president of Torrington Little League.

Williston was a registered professional engineer and land surveyor. He was a member of the American Association of State Highway Officials' subcommittee on traffic engineering and the Highway Research Board's committee on traffic engineering.

He leaves a son, Robert M. Williston Jr. of Monroe; a sister, Harriet Williston of West Hartford, and a grandson.

The funeral will be Friday at 9:15 a.m. from the Driscoll Mortuary, 183 Migeon Ave., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Saint Francis Church. Burial will be in the new St. Francis Church. Burial will be in the new St. Francis Cemetery.

Calling hours are Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. in the funeral home.
