Companion's Shot Fatal to Hunter

LA GRANDE, Sep. 20 (Special) — Hugh Caldwell Bowerman, 44, Milton hardware merchant, was accidentally shot and killed by a hunting ocmpanion, Claude Omar DeShirley, 31, manager of a Pacific Power & Light company plant near Milton, in Jarbeau creek canyon, Saturday.

Coroner Lot Snodgrass said no inquest would be held.

Bowerman and DeShirley had obtained special permits from the state game commission to hunt for bear on Jarbeau creek near the northern boundary of Union county after Carl Kelley had complained that bears had killed his sheep in that vicinity. The two men were on opposite sides of the canyon when DeShirley mistook Bowerman for a bear and shot at him. The bullet entered the body at the right shoulder and came out through the left shoulder.

Bowerman is survived by the widow and two children. Funeral services will be held in Portland.
